CONMEBOL's Disciplinary Committee has officially awarded Flamengo a 3-0 victory in their suspended Copa Libertadores fixture against Independiente Medellín. This decision, stemming from disturbances that led to the match's cancellation, confirms Flamengo's first-place standing in Group A of the prestigious South American club competition.

Independiente Medellín has been held responsible for the incidents that caused the game's abandonment and faces significant sanctions as a result. The ruling ensures Flamengo mathematically secures the top position in their group, having already guaranteed qualification for the knockout stages.

Disciplinary Actions and Stadium Incidents

The match, originally scheduled as part of the fourth group stage round, was halted prematurely in Colombia due to severe disruptions initiated by the home team's supporters. The CONMEBOL committee's verdict attributes the responsibility for the lack of security at the Atanasio Girardot stadium to Independiente Medellín as the host club.

Consequently, the Colombian team has been penalized with a requirement to play their next five home matches in CONMEBOL competitions behind closed doors. Additionally, they will play two away games without fan support and have been fined €100,000.

Match Abandonment Details

The game was stopped just five minutes into the first half. Reports indicate a hostile atmosphere that was palpable even before the opening whistle, with Independiente Medellín fans protesting the club's current turbulent period. Members of fan groups, described as wearing black and having their faces covered, threw flares and other pyrotechnics onto the field. There were also reports of a small fire breaking out in the stands.

Despite protective barriers surrounding the pitch, some fans managed to breach security and enter the field of play, reportedly throwing parts of the barriers themselves. Faced with escalating violence, the match referee made the decision to order the teams off the field. After a delay exceeding the regulation 45 minutes and a failed attempt to clear the stadium, CONMEBOL formally announced the match's cancellation.

Implications for Group A Standings

With the three points awarded, Flamengo now boasts 13 points in Group A, solidifying their leadership. This victory comes after their crucial 1-0 win against Estudiantes on the preceding Wednesday, which had already secured their passage to the Round of 16.

The final group stage match for Flamengo will be at home against the already eliminated Cusco. Meanwhile, Independiente Medellín and Estudiantes will compete directly for the second qualifying spot in the group.
