A major international surfing competition in New Zealand was brought to a standstill after a cameraman was bitten by a marine animal while filming in the water. The incident occurred during the semi-final of the World Surf League event held off the coast of Raglan.

Initial reports from organizers suggest the animal could have been a shark or a sea lion. Brazilian competitors Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira were reportedly in the water during their heat when the cameraman was attacked, with witnesses seeing water splash as the bite occurred.

Immediate Response and Assessment

The injured cameraman was quickly brought to shore and received medical attention. All other individuals in the water were safely removed via jet skis. Renato Hickel, a spokesperson for the event, described the scene as “shocking” for everyone involved.

The cameraman suffered minor bite wounds, believed to be on his foot. A doctor who provided first aid indicated that the injuries were more consistent with a sea lion bite than a shark attack. Nevertheless, Hickel acknowledged the frightening nature of the encounter, stating, “it remains terrifying.”

Historical Incidents in WSL Events

This is not the first time marine life has disrupted a World Surf League competition. In a notable incident in 2015, Australian world champion Mick Fanning narrowly escaped a shark attack during an event in South Africa. That competition was ultimately canceled due to the dangerous encounter.

Resilience and Resumption of Competition

Despite the unsettling event, the bitten cameraman was reported to be in good spirits and even insisted that the competition should continue. The event, billed as the largest surfing gathering ever in New Zealand, had attracted several thousand spectators.

The timing of the incident, combined with unfavorable tidal conditions, necessitated a delay in the final day of the eleven-day event. However, organizers noted that the pause allowed for the wind to subside, potentially improving wave conditions for the resumption of the competition. Hickel commented positively on the situation, “The wind that was bothering us has died down, and the waves are better than this morning.”

  • Incident: Cameraman bitten by marine animal
  • Suspected Animal: Shark or sea lion

The incident highlights the inherent risks involved in open-water sports and the unpredictable nature of marine wildlife. For fans of surfing and the World Surf League, such events serve as a stark reminder of the environment in which these athletes compete. While the immediate concern was the safety of the cameraman and participants, the disruption also tested the resilience of the event organizers and the determination of the surfers. The eventual resumption of the competition, under improved conditions, underscores the dedication to the sport.
