Jonathan Tah Reflects on Journey to World Cup and Family Ties to Côte d’Ivoire
Bayern Munich and Germany defender Jonathan Tah shares his path to the FIFA World Cup, discussing overcoming doubts and his unique connection to an upcoming opponent.

A decade after his international debut, Bayern Munich and Germany defender Jonathan Tah is finally set to experience the FIFA World Cup. The 30-year-old centre-back, a key figure for Bayern Munich in their recent treble-winning season, reflected on his winding path to representing his country on the global stage in an interview with the DFB's Journal magazine.
Tah's inclusion in Julian Nagelsmann's squad for the 2026 tournament comes after he was overlooked for the 2018 and 2022 editions. Despite achieving significant club success, including winning his second Bundesliga title and the DFB Cup in his first season at Bayern, Tah admitted to harbouring lingering "doubts" about his World Cup prospects.
Overcoming Doubts
"It was important for me to focus on what I could control, and I can't control whether a coach calls me up or takes me to a tournament," Tah explained. "However, I can control my own behaviour and, therefore, the performance I bring to the pitch." This mindset has been crucial for the defender, who has made 46 appearances for Germany and nearly 500 senior club appearances throughout his career.
Tah's journey has not been without its challenges, but he has remained steadfast in his belief in his own abilities. He spoke about resisting pressure to adopt a more aggressive, "thug-like" persona often associated with defenders, preferring to stay true to his own character. "I didn't want to do that, because I'm not. I'm glad I didn't have to be a thug to be here now," he stated. "Whenever I stayed true to myself, I was 100 per cent convinced that this path was the right one for me. That I have what it takes to play football at the highest level. Deep down, I had no doubts."
Family Ties to Côte d'Ivoire
A unique aspect of Tah's World Cup campaign will be facing his father's homeland, Côte d'Ivoire, in the group stage. This encounter holds significant personal meaning for the Bayern Munich defender.
"This connection is important to me. My family roots in the Ivory Coast are simply a part of me and give me something," Tah shared. He reflected on his father's journey to Germany and the hardships he endured, which has helped Tah maintain perspective during his own footballing challenges. "When I go through a difficult period in football, it feels like nothing compared to that."
Germany's World Cup Aspirations
Looking ahead to Germany's chances in the tournament, Tah expressed confidence in his team's potential. Germany, a four-time World Cup winner, aims to bounce back from disappointing group-stage exits in the previous two tournaments. Tah is expected to form a strong central defensive partnership with Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck.
"Anything is possible for us. We have a team that, when it gets into its flow, when it gains momentum, can achieve anything," he affirmed. While acknowledging that some nations might appear stronger on paper, Tah believes that team cohesion and spirit will be decisive factors. "I don't believe that names ultimately matter when it comes to winning a tournament. It's much more about cohesion and team spirit."
