FIFA Defends MetLife Stadium Pitch Ahead of World Cup Final Amidst Player Criticism

FIFA has asserted that the playing surface at MetLife Stadium is prepared to host the 2026 World Cup final, despite significant criticism from players during the early stages of the tournament. Officials acknowledge the concerns but express confidence that the pitch will provide a suitable stage for the biggest match in football.

Pitch Concerns Surface Early

Throughout the group stage matches held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the condition of the temporary grass pitch became a recurring talking point. Several high-profile players voiced their dissatisfaction, citing it as a factor affecting gameplay. Brazil forward Vinicius Junior noted that the pitch’s tendency to dry out quickly due to weather conditions slowed the game down, hindering his team’s rhythm. He commented, “We can’t build up a rhythm. That makes things difficult because we want to play. We want to move the ball from one side to the other, and this disrupts our game.”

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot was even more direct, describing the surface as feeling “more like an artificial surface. Quite hard and quite rigid.” Head coach Didier Deschamps echoed these sentiments, suggesting the presence of “cement below the grass” and very short blades of grass.

FIFA’s Strategic Gamble

Alan Ferguson, FIFA’s man in charge of pitch development and maintenance for the tournament, explained that the early issues stemmed from a strategic decision to use “warm-season” grass. This choice was made to ensure the pitch had the longest possible viable lifespan, given its late-stage hosting of the final. Ferguson acknowledged this was a calculated risk, as the initial weather in New Jersey was cooler than anticipated for the warm-season turf.

“For the first 10 to 12 days of its existence in MetLife, the warm-season grass just sort of woke up in the morning and thought, ‘What have you done to me? Why have you brought me to this cold place?’” Ferguson stated. “That checked its growth momentarily and caused an aesthetic reaction on the surface, and that’s what everybody saw (in those early matches). From a playability perspective, the pitch was absolutely fine.”

Mitigation Efforts and Nature’s Help

To address the initial growth issues, FIFA employed several methods. Grow covers, described as similar to a winter quilt, were used to retain warmth. Additionally, grow lights were utilized to provide a slight temperature benefit. However, Ferguson emphasized that ultimately, they had to rely on “Mother Nature to give us that final helping hand” in the form of increased air temperatures. He defended the decision not to make drastic changes mid-tournament, stating, “To change the consistency of a surface in mid-tournament, especially a World Cup, is never a great thing to do.”

Previous Issues at MetLife

This is not the first time MetLife Stadium’s temporary grass surface has drawn criticism. Similar complaints arose during the 2024 Copa America and the Club World Cup held the previous summer. For this World Cup, however, significant infrastructure upgrades were implemented, including a fully automatic irrigation system, a sub-air vacuum ventilation system, and improved drainage, which were not present during earlier events. The current pitch composition includes the grass, an upper rootzone of sand and soil, a lower rootzone of sand, and a drainage gravel raft.
