How to check a football transfer rumour
A source-first guide to separating confirmed transfers, reported talks and weak social-media rumours.
Start with the strongest source
Club announcements, league registration records and official player statements carry more weight than aggregator accounts. Media reports can be useful, but they should be named and attributed.
Look for missing details
Weak rumours often lack fee, contract length, buying club need, selling club position or registration context.
Use cautious language
When a rumour is not confirmed, say reported, linked, in talks or under consideration. Do not write confirmed unless the evidence supports it.
