The Italian women’s football landscape is experiencing a significant shift as an increasing number of its top players opt for opportunities in leagues outside of Serie A. This trend, accelerated since the summer of 2025, follows the national team’s strong performance at the European Championship, which brought international attention to Italian talent.

A Wave of Departures

While Arianna Caruso’s move to Bayern Munich in January 2025 marked an early departure, the summer of that year saw a notable surge in players seeking new challenges abroad. Sofia Cantore and Lisa Boattin moved to the United States, later joined by national teammates Cristiana Girelli and Lucia Di Guglielmo during the winter transfer window. Elena Linari also made a move to England in January, and most recently, Laura Giuliani returned to Germany, where she began her career.

Balancing Progress and Peril

This exodus highlights the advancements made by the Italian women’s football movement and its elite players. However, it also raises questions about the future technical and tactical standard of Serie A. The league’s economic limitations prevent it from competing with major European leagues or the North American NWSL, potentially leading to a decline in quality. The departure of star players, including those in their prime like Cantore and Caruso, and potentially younger talents like Giulia Dragoni if Barcelona secures her permanently, leaves a void that a new generation of players may struggle to fill within the twelve Serie A clubs.

Serie A’s Foreign Influence and National Team Repercussions

In recent years, Serie A has increasingly mirrored the men’s game, with numerous foreign players, not always of the highest caliber, filling squad rosters. This trend limits opportunities for young Italian talent, often relegating them to backup roles or forcing them to seek opportunities in lower divisions, with only a few exceptions like Galli, Pellegrino Cimò, Schatzer, Arrigoni, and Cherubini. This situation could pose long-term challenges for the Italian national team, which is already undergoing a generational transition. This transition is expected to accelerate after the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, a tournament Italy has yet to qualify for, and which may represent the final international outing for a generation that revitalized women’s football in Italy since 2019.

The ongoing player migration presents a critical juncture for Italian women’s football. While the international success of its players reflects positively on the nation’s talent pool, the potential weakening of Serie A could hinder domestic development and impact the national team’s future competitiveness. Fans and stakeholders will be closely watching how Serie A clubs adapt and whether a new wave of talent can emerge to maintain the league’s standing.
