Portland Timbers Appoint Martí Cifuentes as New Head Coach
The Portland Timbers have reportedly chosen Martí Cifuentes, formerly of Leicester City and QPR, as their next head coach, aiming to bolster their performance in the Western Conference.

Portland Timbers Set to Name Martí Cifuentes as New Head Coach
The Portland Timbers are reportedly on the verge of appointing Martí Cifuentes as their next permanent head coach, according to sources briefed on the decision. The Spanish manager, aged 44, is expected to take the helm following the club’s decision to part ways with Phil Neville in May.
Under the interim guidance of Jack Cassidy, the Timbers returned from the World Cup break with a convincing 5-1 victory over rivals Seattle Sounders. The team currently sits 11th in the Western Conference, three points adrift of a playoff spot with 19 matches remaining in the season. Cifuentes is anticipated to take over coaching duties once his visa is secured. The club’s next fixture is scheduled for Wednesday night at home against FC Dallas.
Managerial Background and Tactical Acumen
Sources indicate that Cifuentes was chosen for the permanent role due to his tactical intelligence and attacking philosophy. He is recognized as a young manager with a significant amount of coaching experience, having previously managed clubs such as Leicester City, Queens Park Rangers (QPR), and Hammarby.
The search for a new head coach was extensive, with other notable finalists reportedly including Panama national team head coach Thomas Christiansen and former Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff. The Timbers had also held discussions with Jim Curtin, who was appointed as the head coach of Austin FC in June but is slated to begin his role in the 2027 season. Portland interviewed a wide array of candidates, both from domestic and international backgrounds, some of whom have since secured positions in Europe.
Previous Coaching Stints
Cifuentes’ most recent role was with Leicester City. He was surprisingly dismissed by the club in January while they were in 14th place, six points outside the playoff positions. Following his departure, Leicester managed only one win in their next 15 matches and were ultimately relegated. Prior to his time at Leicester, Cifuentes spent a season and a half at QPR. He took over a team struggling in the lower half of the table during the 2023-24 campaign and successfully guided them to safety, finishing 15th in his sole full season in charge.
Player Fit and Future Prospects
While the Portland Timbers squad is expected to see changes this summer, the club believes that several key players will adapt well under Cifuentes’ management. Designated players Kristoffer Velde and David Da Costa are identified as potential fits for his system. Additionally, Venezuelan international forward Kevin Kelsy, the team’s current leading scorer with seven goals, two of which were scored against Seattle, is another player expected to feature prominently. Defender Finn Surman, who represented New Zealand at the World Cup and scored against Egypt, and Cole Bassett, who also scored in the recent match against the Sounders and was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rapids, are also part of the team’s core.
