Switzerland Faces Familiar Foe in Algeria’s Vladimir Petkovic in World Cup Knockout Round
Switzerland is set to face former coach Vladimir Petkovic, now managing Algeria, in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match.

Switzerland is poised for a unique encounter in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 as they prepare to face Algeria on Thursday. The match carries an extra layer of intrigue with Algeria managed by Vladimir Petkovic, the former head coach of the Swiss national team. Petkovic, who has been in charge of Algeria since 2024, previously led Switzerland from 2014 to 2021, a period marked by significant stability and success on the international stage.
Under Petkovic’s guidance, Switzerland consistently reached the knockout stages of major tournaments, including the Round of 16 in every World Cup since 2014 and two consecutive quarterfinal appearances at the European Championships. This legacy of performance continued even after his departure, setting a high standard for the team.
Familiarity and Tactics
The presence of Petkovic on the opposing bench has sparked discussions about its potential impact. Switzerland’s Breel Embolo acknowledged the familiarity, stating, “He’s a coach that knows me very well. I’m not the only one. I think he knows a lot of players.” However, Embolo emphasized that his personal approach would remain unchanged: “Personally speaking, no, nothing’s going to change on my front. I’m going to play the football I’m used to playing, taking into consideration not only the qualities of the Algerian squad, but also their weak spots. We’re going to work together as a group, and we’re going to try and get in there 100% because we believe that if we play to our strengths, we’ve got what it takes to get through to the next round.”
Murat Yakin, the current Swiss coach and a former intern of Petkovic at Young Boys, also recognized the dual nature of the situation. “I really appreciate the way he works, the way he treats the players, and also the way he lets the players play,” Yakin commented. “The players know him, he knows most of the players. It can be an advantage and a disadvantage, but five years have passed since, and our style of football has changed and evolved. He helped the team to qualify for many tournaments, so thanks to him, and I’m very happy to see him tomorrow.”
Petkovic himself, however, suggested that the element of surprise might be limited in modern football. “The world of football has become universal,” he said. “Everyone knows each other. There are no real secrets left in the game. I don’t think it’s a huge advantage to know someone or someone else, just as I know the players, the players know me, and it’s a huge pleasure to come up against them. It’ll be lovely to meet and greet them, but after that, the players will go out there on the pitch, and I’m certainly expecting a tough game, and in order to win a match we need to give 120% against a very decent Swiss inside.”
Africa’s World Cup Aspirations
Algeria now carries the hopes of many African football fans. The continent saw nine nations reach the Round of 32, underscoring the growth of the sport in Africa. However, Morocco remains the sole African team to have advanced to the knockout stages thus far. While many African teams faced formidable opponents, Algeria has a credible opportunity to progress. Cape Verde faces a challenging fixture against reigning champions Argentina, and Ghana is not favored against Colombia, though Egypt may have a chance against Australia.
Match Details and Prediction
Switzerland secured their passage to the knockout stages with a display of defensive resilience. Algeria, on the other hand, showcased their attacking potential in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria in their final group game. Despite their offensive capabilities, Algeria has demonstrated defensive vulnerabilities. Switzerland, known for its tactical discipline, is anticipated to have enough quality to overcome Algeria.
