Mehdi Taremi, a key figure for the Iran national football team, has voiced strong criticism against FIFA, labeling the organization of the current World Cup as a “disaster” off the field. These pointed remarks came in the wake of Iran’s dramatic 1-1 draw against Egypt in Seattle.

Taremi, who missed a first-half penalty in the match, detailed the significant logistical challenges his team has faced. He revealed that Iran was unable to train in the United States throughout the tournament due to a last-minute change that forced them to be based in Tijuana, Mexico. This arrangement led to considerable travel difficulties for matches in the US, compounded by team staff facing visa issues, resulting in their absence.

Por que importa

“It’s a disastrous World Cup. A disaster. FIFA has to solve all the problems here, but unfortunately, they haven’t solved anything since the beginning,” Taremi stated. He recounted a visit from FIFA President Gianni Infantino after their first game, where he was told it was “just the beginning.” However, with the group stage nearing its end, Taremi highlighted that their logistics personnel still lacked necessary visas.

“As professional players in a professional competition, this is not right… it’s not fair… if for FIFA it’s fair, great for them. But it’s not fair. Whoever wants to help us… nobody helps. Nobody,” Taremi expressed his frustration.

Contexto

When questioned about whether he felt the organizers, including FIFA and US authorities, might be favoring Iran’s elimination, Taremi responded with a telling sentiment. “We have to fight against everything here. I don’t know if people want [that] or not, but, from our perspective, yes, it seems like it,” he said.

Despite the adversities, Taremi stressed the team’s unwavering commitment. “I feel sad, but we have hope. We always give our best. We play for our people. We want them to be happy because we want to bring them joy,” he emphasized. He also conveyed a broader message, stating, “We want to send a message of peace to the people in Iran, outside of Iran, to FIFA, to everyone. But there is no peace from others towards us.”

The draw against Egypt, while securing Egypt’s historic qualification, left Iran with a sense of missed opportunity and added to the team’s grievances regarding the tournament’s organizational shortcomings. The team’s performance, Taremi suggests, has been hampered not just by on-field challenges but by a series of external difficulties that have impacted their preparation and focus.
