The 2026 World Cup is already generating headlines off the pitch as UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin faces widespread criticism for reportedly calling the expanded tournament’s matches “uninteresting.” This controversy coincides with the arrival of the Iranian national team in the United States, a journey marked by protests and security concerns.

Ceferin’s alleged remarks, made at a conference last Monday, have sparked a strong reaction from numerous football associations across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. According to Zurnal 24, Čeferin stated, “We have a huge number of matches that are completely uninteresting.”

In response, the associations of Cape Verde, Congo, Curaçao, Haiti, Jordan, and Uzbekistan issued a joint statement, expressing solidarity with Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia. Their statement emphasized that “Football does not belong to a select group of nations. Its strength comes from its universality.” They further highlighted that for many countries, World Cup participation is “a moment that inspires a generation, accelerates football development and creates memories that last a lifetime.”

Iran’s Arrival Amidst Tensions

The Iranian national team’s arrival in Los Angeles has been overshadowed by protests and ongoing political tensions. The team flew into LA from Tijuana, Mexico, after their initial relocation amid a dispute over visas. This arrival marks a significant moment, as it is the first time a host nation has welcomed a team from a country with which it is at war.

Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi commented on the situation, suggesting that the controversy and disruption surrounding their World Cup involvement undermine FIFA’s message of peace. Taremi admitted to feeling the tension before arriving in Los Angeles on the eve of their opening match. The team is expected to face opposition from Iranians residing in the US who believe the national team does not represent their country. Iran has faced several challenges in the lead-up to the tournament, with some officials reportedly denied entry into the US.
