Real Betis welcome Porto to the Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla on Wednesday for their second match of the Champions League league phase, with both sides aiming to build on contrasting opening results.

The Spanish side started their return to Europe’s top competition with a dramatic 3-2 victory away to Lille, while Porto suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City on Matchday 1. This encounter offers both teams a chance to gain early momentum in the league-phase standings.

Key facts

Detail Real Betis Porto
Champions League Matchday 1 result 3-2 win vs Lille (A) 0-2 loss vs Man City (H)
Recent league form 5-2 win vs Osasuna (H) 2-1 win vs Maritimo (A)
Current league position 3rd in LaLiga 1st in Primeira Liga
Home/away record in Spain Won all 4 home matches this season 1 win in last 8 matches in Spain

Betis riding high after strong start

Manuel Pellegrini’s side ended a 20-year absence from the Champions League group stage with a resilient performance in France. Marc Bartra scored twice before Troy Parrott netted the winner, showing the team’s ability to recover from setbacks.

The Seville-based club have lost only three of their last 13 European matches and have scored at least twice in each of their last nine continental home fixtures. Their attacking threat was again evident at the weekend, when they put five past Osasuna in LaLiga.

Betis have won all four home matches this season across all competitions, with their only defeat in nine games coming away from home. This strong form at the Estadio La Cartuja makes them a difficult opponent for any visiting side.

Porto seeking response after opening defeat

The Portuguese champions returned to the Champions League after a three-year absence but began with a disappointing home loss to Manchester City. Despite that result, Porto have won eight of their last 11 league-phase or group-stage matches in the competition.

Vitor Bruno’s team have responded well domestically, winning their last three competitive matches including a comeback victory at Maritimo that kept them five points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga. However, their record in Spain is concerning: just one win in eight visits, with that victory coming against Athletic Club in the 2014-15 season.

Team news and injuries

Real Betis are likely to be without Junior Firpo due to an adductor injury. Aitor Ruibal is doubtful with a knee problem, while Antony requires assessment after picking up a muscular issue against Osasuna. Alvaro Valles should continue in goal, with Hector Bellerin, Marc Bartra, Natan and Fran Garcia forming the back four. Isco is expected to operate behind striker Troy Parrott.

Porto will be without suspended defender Jan Bednarek. Zaidu Sanusi is out with an abductor injury. Nehuen Perez is close to recovering from a thigh injury and may be available if he proves his fitness. William Gomes is sidelined with an ankle injury, meaning Borja Sainz could start on the right side of attack.

Predicted lineups

Real Betis possible starting XI: Valles; Bellerin, Bartra, Natan, F Garcia; Bernal, Ceballos; Riquelme, Isco, Ezzalzouli; Parrott

Porto possible starting XI: D Costa; A Costa, Perez, Kiwior, F Moura; Veiga, Rosario, Froholdt; Sainz, A Silva, Pietuszewski

Match outlook

Betis have shown they can navigate difficult European fixtures, and their strong home record gives them an edge. Porto’s struggles on Spanish soil add to the challenge they face. Both teams need points to build their campaigns, but the hosts’ current momentum and home advantage make them slight favorites.

A hard-fought home victory appears the most likely outcome, though Porto’s ability to score in European matches means they cannot be discounted.
