Borussia Dortmund Fall to Bodø/Glimt in Champions League Shock
Fredrik Sjøvold’s second-half strike gave the Norwegian side a 1-0 win over Niko Kovač’s Dortmund, who struggled to break down a disciplined home defence in Wednesday’s Champions League clash.

Niko Kovač’s Borussia Dortmund fell to a 1-0 defeat against Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, a result that leaves the Black-Yellows with one win and one loss in this season’s group stage.
Fredrik Sjøvold’s composed 52nd-minute finish was enough to separate the sides at the Aspmyra Stadion, as the hosts capitalised on a disciplined defensive display and a slow start from the visitors. Dortmund pushed for an equaliser after the hour mark but were repeatedly denied by Bodø/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin.
The match
Kovač made five changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen at the weekend, handing starts to Ramy Bensebaini, Joey Veerman, Konstantinos Karetsas, Samuele Inácio and Fabio Silva. Key figures Felix Nmecha, Ethan Nwaneri, Marcel Sabitzer and Serhou Guirassy began on the bench, while defender Nico Schlotterbeck was left out entirely.
Bodø/Glimt, who made two changes of their own, started brightly. Sondre Brunstad Fet fired over inside the first minute, and Jens Petter Hauge forced Gregor Kobel into a save after good work from Sondre Auklend. Fet later bent a shot narrowly wide after being played through by Patrick Berg.
Dortmund struggled to find rhythm in the first half. Joane Gadou was booked in the 13th minute for pulling back Fredrik Bjørkan, and Silva picked up a yellow card of his own in the 25th for a high boot on the same player. Hauge then found Andreas Helmersen with a cushioned ball across the six-yard box, but the striker slid just past the far post as the sides went in level at the break.
Second-half breakthrough
Bodø/Glimt came out of the interval the stronger side. Helmersen forced a fine save from Kobel inside the opening minute of the second half. The breakthrough arrived in the 52nd minute when Berg found Auklend wide on the right. His low cross was met by Sjøvold, who stayed composed to slot the ball low past Kobel for the opening goal.
Kovač reacted after the hour mark with a quadruple substitution, sending on Nmecha, Nwaneri, Guirassy and Julian Ryerson for Veerman, Karetsas, Silva and Inácio. The changes injected urgency into Dortmund’s play. Nmecha forced a smart save from Haikin from distance, and Guirassy went close from a tight angle after a cutback.
Nwaneri then headed straight at Bodø/Glimt’s custodian from an unmarked position after a Bensebaini cross, and later put a clipped cross just beyond Guirassy at the far post. Dortmund kept pressing into stoppage time, with Haikin again denying Nmecha, but the equaliser never came.

What this means for Dortmund
The defeat leaves Dortmund with three points from two Champions League matches, a position that puts pressure on the remaining group fixtures. Kovač’s rotation policy, which saw key attackers start on the bench, did not pay off against a well-organised Bodø/Glimt side that has now made a statement on the European stage.
For Dortmund fans, the result raises questions about squad depth and the team’s ability to impose itself away from home against determined opposition. The Black-Yellows will need to regroup quickly, with a trip to Azerbaijan’s Sabah on 20 October offering a chance to return to winning ways in the competition.
Bodø/Glimt, meanwhile, have shown they can compete with a Champions League regular. Their compact defensive structure and quick transitions caused Dortmund problems throughout, and Sjøvold’s goal was a reward for persistent pressure.
