Franco Colapinto enjoyed a triumphant weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix, the fifth event on the Formula 1 calendar, clinching his career-best sixth-place finish and securing eight vital points for the Alpine team. This performance marks a significant milestone for the young Argentine driver.

A Difficult Start and a Resilient Comeback

Colapinto arrived in Montreal with considerable optimism, fueled by recent improvements observed in his Alpine challenger. However, his weekend was nearly derailed from the outset. A power unit issue on Friday prevented him from completing any laps during the sole practice session. Despite this early setback, Colapinto demonstrated remarkable resilience, quickly refocusing his efforts. By the end of the weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, he was able to leave with a smile, having achieved his most successful race in the premier class of motorsport.

His sixth-place finish is not only a personal best but also represents the strongest Formula 1 result for an Argentine driver in over four decades. The last comparable achievement was Carlos Reutemann’s second-place finish in South Africa in 1982. Reflecting on his performance in the mixed zone, Colapinto expressed his elation: “I’m happy. We’re doing great. We’re moving up the ladder…” he stated with a laugh, referencing his seventh-place finish in Miami the preceding weekend and underscoring the team’s upward trajectory.

Navigating a Strategic Race

Despite the strong numerical outcome, Colapinto characterized the race itself as somewhat uneventful from his perspective, as he spent a considerable portion of the event running in clear air. He initially benefited from the early retirement of Arvin Lindblad of Racing Bulls, which elevated him from tenth on the starting grid to ninth position. In the initial laps, Colapinto adeptly defended his place against challenges from Liam Lawson, Nico Hülkenberg, Oliver Bearman, and Fernando Alonso. As his chosen medium tires reached their optimal temperature, Colapinto began to establish a gap over this chasing pack.

Strategic pit stops further improved his standing. The early pit stops of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who had started on intermediate tires and saw them degrade rapidly, allowed Colapinto to ascend to seventh place. The unexpected retirement of George Russell on lap 30 due to an engine failure then promoted him to sixth, shortly before his own pit stop. This stop was strategically timed during a safety car period, which was deployed after Russell’s Mercedes came to a halt on the track.

Colapinto maintained a comfortable margin over Lawson in seventh place and was able to complete the remainder of the race without significant pressure. While he was too far adrift of the leading cars to mount a challenge for higher positions, he also had a substantial buffer to those behind him.

A Moment of Concern in the Pit Lane

The sole instance of significant concern for Colapinto occurred as he exited the pit lane following his tire change to hard compounds. He briefly lost control of his vehicle after encountering a wet patch on the track, resulting in contact with the wall on the left side of his car. “I hit the wall hard on the left side,” he explained. Fortunately, the damage was minimal, with only a minor scrape reported on the endplate and the rear left wheel, along with some reported suspension issues. These minor damages did not impede his ability to finish the race.

“At first, I pushed a lot. In the first part, I was going full throttle, very fast, because I wanted to build a bigger gap over Lawson to position myself well for the pit stop. And when I pitted, I came out fast and made that small mistake. But after that, I calmed down and drove well until the end,” he recounted.

Team Effort and Future Aspirations

Colapinto underscored the importance of the team’s collective effort in achieving this result. “Going from the situation we started the weekend in to achieving double points for the team is a great result and a fantastic reward for all the work we are doing.” He also expressed deep pride in his personal accomplishment: “I am very proud of the work we have done collectively, and today we achieved a great result as a team. Also, it’s my best result in Formula 1, which makes me very happy.”

Although he finished nearly 15 seconds behind race winner Hadjar, Colapinto’s performance highlighted his growing competitiveness. He conveyed strong confidence in the car’s recent upgrades, stating, “I have confidence in the car. I think it was noticeable in Miami that the changes they made at the factory helped a lot; they gave us a step forward, and from that, I am more competitive. I’m sure that’s the way forward.”

Points Accumulation and Historical Context

The eight points secured in Canada bring Colapinto’s season total to 15 points. This includes the single point earned in China and the six points from Miami. When combined with the five points he accumulated in 2024 with Williams, his career Formula 1 points tally reaches 20. This places him as the fourth highest-scoring Argentine driver in the sport’s history. He trails only the legendary figures of Carlos Reutemann (310 points), Juan Manuel Fangio (277.64 points), and José Froilán González (77.64 points).

“It was a long race, many laps, a bit lonely, yes, but I still took the points. Double points for the team as well, sixth and eighth (referring to Pierre Gasly’s seventh-place finish), so I’m very happy,” he concluded. “We know we benefited from others’ misfortune, and it’s never nice to benefit from others’ problems, but we made the most of everything we could and brought the car home. And we know we still have a lot to do to be more competitive, improve the car’s performance, and get closer to the front through our own merit.”

He added, with evident enthusiasm, “I’m happy to have given this result to the Argentinians. They deserved it for supporting me so much.”
