Popovich’s Enduring Influence Guides Spurs Towards NBA Finals

The San Antonio Spurs are on the cusp of the NBA Finals, facing the New York Knicks, and the enduring influence of Gregg Popovich remains a significant factor in their success. Despite stepping down as head coach, Popovich, now President of Basketball Operations, continues to be a guiding force for the team, inspiring players like Victor Wembanyama with his vast experience and leadership.

Wembanyama’s Emotional Reflection

Following the Spurs’ Western Conference Finals victory, Victor Wembanyama struggled to articulate his feelings about Gregg Popovich’s role and what this playoff run signifies for the legendary coach. Visibly moved, Wembanyama expressed his need to connect with Popovich to fully grasp his emotions. “I don’t know what it means for him,” Wembanyama stated. “He’s a guy who has more experience as a coach than almost anyone and has been through so many things in his career and so many things now as ‘The Boss.’ He’s going through things we can’t even imagine. So I need to call him. I need to see him. I need to talk to him because there’s no way I can understand how he feels right now.”

Popovich’s Evolving Role

At 77, Gregg Popovich holds the official title of President of Basketball Operations for the Spurs. However, his impact extends far beyond administrative duties. The Basketball Hall of Famer is a regular presence at practices and games, often seen offering insights and motivation. He even addressed the team in the locker room after a Game 3 loss in the Western Conference Finals, providing what was described as a brief pep talk and, potentially, a reprimand. Popovich himself humorously embraced his new role, introducing himself as “The Boss” after his November 2024 stroke, which effectively ended his coaching tenure and led to Mitch Johnson’s interim appointment.

Player Testimonials

Devin Vassell, a guard for the Spurs, emphasized the invaluable nature of Popovich’s wisdom. “You talk about the best coach practically of all time and to be able to sit here and have you tell you the experiences that they went through or he’s been through or he sees,” Vassell commented. “I mean, there’s no comparison, honestly. It helps. It helps a lot. … He has so much wisdom and things that you can’t take for granted.”

Knicks Coach’s Respect

Mike Brown, the head coach of the New York Knicks, has a deep understanding of Popovich’s impact, having served as an assistant under him in San Antonio for three years. Brown acknowledged Popovich’s continued significant presence within the league. “He still has a huge presence. He’ll always have a presence,” Brown said of Popovich. “The job that he has done, not just on the court with that team or that organization, but also off the court, is going to be etched as long as the game of basketball exists. His presence is felt so much, all the time, and I have so much respect for the organization for so many different reasons.”

A Familiar Finality

The NBA Finals will feature the Knicks against the Spurs, a matchup that brings a sense of closure as Popovich’s first championship with the Spurs in 1999 also came against the Knicks. As the Spurs embark on this new era under Mitch Johnson, the lessons learned from Popovich are paramount. With four more wins needed to secure a championship, Wembanyama recognizes that Popovich’s deep understanding of what it takes to win is an invaluable asset.
