Diego Esteche Embraces Pressure Ahead of Professional MMA Debut at WOW 31 Madrid
Spanish talent Diego Esteche discusses his transition to professional MMA, his amateur success, and the pressure that comes with high expectations as he prepares to compete at WOW 31 Madrid.

Spanish MMA prospect Diego Esteche is set to make his professional debut at WOW 31 Madrid on June 6th, facing Rafael Saraiva. Esteche, who boasts a perfect 14-0 amateur record, all by stoppage, expressed his readiness and positive outlook on the pressure accompanying his highly anticipated entry into professional fighting.
Esteche shared his perspective on the transition from amateur to professional ranks in an interview with MARCA Futbol. He highlighted that his daily routine has long mirrored that of a professional fighter, involving rigorous training, physical conditioning, and nutritional guidance. This consistent dedication has prepared him mentally and physically for the new opportunities that professional MMA presents.
Por que importa
“My day-to-day is that of a professional: I train in the morning, in the afternoon, I work with people on physical conditioning and nutrition,” Esteche stated. “So, in the end, I feel I have a very, very high professional degree. My day-to-day is that of a professional.”
Esteche’s amateur career has been nothing short of spectacular. With 14 victories, all achieved by way of stoppage, he has generated significant excitement within the Spanish MMA community. Despite the high expectations this record creates, Esteche remains unfazed, viewing the pressure as a sign of recognition.
Contexto
“I don’t think about it. The important thing in a fight is to win,” he explained. “In the end, time passes, and what people will remember is ‘Esteche beat so-and-so…’. It’s true that everyone is waiting, but it’s the most normal thing. It doesn’t worry me, I don’t think it’s bad. In the end, it’s part of this; the pressure makes me proud because it means I’m in the spotlight.”
The journey into combat sports began for Esteche through wrestling, which he pursued from a young age. At 17, he started boxing casually before falling in love with MMA after watching UFC events. While initially not intending to pursue MMA, the spectacle and the idea of being a focal point captivated him.
“I used to do wrestling. At 17, I started boxing, but very little… it was in a friend’s garage in the town, once a week. And I fell in love with the UFC,” Esteche recalled. “I saw the UFC Embedded and was amazed. I didn’t want to do MMA, but I watched them and was amazed and thought, ‘I want to be this someday, part of this, you know?’. In whatever sport, I didn’t care. At that time, I was doing boxing, so boxing. And I wanted to be that. To be the focus of attention, the focus of the cameras.”
Esteche acknowledged the challenges of pursuing combat sports in Spain, especially without professional status. He mentioned receiving support through wrestling scholarships, a sport recognized as Olympic, which has been crucial in allowing him to dedicate himself to training. He expressed gratitude towards various individuals and organizations, including the wrestling federation and his coaches, for their support.
“While I was doing wrestling, I gave classes in schools. In the end, wrestling is an Olympic sport, so you always end up with scholarships, based on results, etc.,” Esteche said. “And the truth is, I am very grateful because I haven’t had that many, but throughout all this time I’ve been dedicated to wrestling or MMA, to sport in general, there have always been people with very good intentions behind me who have supported me.”
Despite his full-time commitment to MMA, Esteche continues his studies in Finance and Management through distance learning, demonstrating his dedication to balancing his athletic career with his education.
