Kranevitter Reflects on River Plate Stint, Praises Demichelis, and Discusses Gallardo’s Return
The Argentine midfielder, currently without a club, shared his thoughts on his second spell at River Plate, his relationship with former coaches, and his desire to return to the club.

Matías Kranevitter, currently a free agent after his spell with Fatih Karagümrük in Turkey, has spoken candidly about his recent experiences at River Plate. The midfielder, who is seeking his next club, reflected on his second stint with the Buenos Aires giants, the impact of injuries, and shared his views on the coaching tenures of Martín Demichelis and Marcelo Gallardo.
Difficulties in Second River Plate Stint
Kranevitter acknowledged that he was unable to consistently perform at his best during his return to River Plate in late 2022. A significant ankle injury sustained during a pre-season friendly severely hampered his ability to compete effectively.
“In my second spell at River, the ankle didn’t allow me to compete in the best way,” Kranevitter stated in an interview. “We know the demands at River. I left very sad; I couldn’t say goodbye to my people.” He added, “One never expects to leave a place where I grew up in that manner. Football is like that; Marcelo’s (Gallardo) decision was a sporting one; he wanted what was best for the club.”
Despite Gallardo being the coach who gave him his professional debut and who guided him for a significant part of his career, Kranevitter admitted that Gallardo’s second cycle at River did not meet expectations following his return in August 2024.
“Clubs have moments; sometimes the ball doesn’t go in, and results change many things,” he analyzed in conversation with DSports. “It has happened to all teams. In Marcelo’s second cycle, we struggled quite a bit, and you don’t understand why.”
Praise for Demichelis’s Coaching
In stark contrast to his comments on Gallardo’s later period, Kranevitter offered high praise for Martín Demichelis, the coach under whom River Plate won the 2023 Liga Profesional and displayed some of their most impressive football in recent years.
“Martín Demichelis surprised me as a coach; things felt very easy for us,” Kranevitter affirmed. “We were winning matches very comfortably. I learned a lot.” This statement has drawn attention due to the implied comparison with the subsequent period.
Reflecting on Demichelis’s Departure
Kranevitter also touched upon the complex end to Demichelis’s tenure, which was marked by internal conflicts and a perceived loss of support within the squad.
“What happened was difficult; it was complicated for him to reverse the situation,” he noted. “We had a talk with the senior players; I believe there were other ways to resolve it,” he said, referring to the crisis that ultimately led to the coach’s exit.
Future Aspirations and River Plate Return
Despite currently being without a club at 33 years old, Kranevitter expressed a strong emotional connection to River Plate and did not rule out a future return.
“I am always willing to return to River; it’s a question that doesn’t need asking, ha,” he responded with a laugh. While evaluating offers to continue his career, he also voiced his desire to return to Argentine football and regain a prominent role.
“I would like to return to Argentina; I want to compete,” he concluded. “In Turkey, my family was very far away. I would love to play in the Libertadores, Sudamericana, and feel important.”
