Teachers in Santa Cruz, Argentina, intensified their protests against Governor Claudio Vidal on Thursday, coinciding with his birthday. Members of the Asociación Docentes de Santa Cruz (Adosac) set tires ablaze outside the provincial government house in a dramatic demonstration demanding salary increases and protesting deductions from their May wages. “Today is the governor’s birthday. We brought him these to blow out the candles,” protesters reportedly stated, highlighting the personal nature of the timing.

The fiery demonstration underscores a broader salary crisis gripping the Patagonian province, affecting not only educators but also police officers and public administration employees. Governor Vidal, facing mounting pressure, has attributed the provincial government’s inability to raise salaries to a lack of resources and alleged obstruction from the opposition in the provincial Congress.

Widespread Labor Unrest

The teacher’s protest is part of a larger wave of labor unrest sweeping across Santa Cruz. Adosac announced a 48-hour strike for Thursday and Friday, with their next salary negotiation scheduled for June 8. Beyond the teachers, self-convened police officers initiated an indefinite “withdrawal of collaboration” on Wednesday in various localities, including Pico Truncado, Las Heras, and Caleta Olivia, with Río Gallegos’ Patrol Command joining recently.

Authorities have called a Salary Negotiation Table for the police for June 10, though representatives of the self-convened officers, like Ramón Quipildor, claim they were not included. This exclusion further fuels the discontent among law enforcement.

Governor Vidal’s Stance

Governor Vidal addressed the escalating protests in a nearly 10-minute video posted on X (formerly Twitter). He acknowledged the legitimacy of the demands and the difficult economic situation faced by many families, drawing on his own background as a worker. However, he maintained that the provincial government lacks the necessary funds for salary increases.

Vidal accused the opposition of “putting spokes in the wheel” by blocking legislative initiatives aimed at securing financial resources. He specifically cited the rejection of an Economic Emergency Bill and a Financing Law, arguing these actions hindered potential salary discussions. He also directly warned Kirchnerist factions, who he claims governed for 30 years and generated disorder, that he “will not be extorted.”

Negotiations and Deadlocks

Salary negotiations with Central Administration workers (ATE, APAP, and UPCN) on Thursday failed to produce a proposal from the provincial government, leading to a recess until June 16. Discussions with health workers are scheduled for Friday, followed by Vialidad (roads) on Tuesday. The repeated deadlocks and lack of concrete offers from the government continue to exacerbate tensions across all sectors.

The situation in Santa Cruz reflects broader economic challenges in Argentina, where high inflation and fiscal constraints are impacting public sector wages. The governor’s appeals to the public to question the opposition’s actions indicate a political struggle intertwined with the economic crisis, with no immediate resolution in sight for the protesting workers.
