Mercado Libre has opened a new logistics center in Don Torcuato, located in the Tigre district of Buenos Aires province. The e-commerce platform has invested US$1.3 million in this facility, which is expected to create 900 new jobs, comprising 200 direct and 700 indirect positions. This expansion aims to strengthen Mercado Libre’s operational capacity in the Northern Zone of the Greater Buenos Aires Area (AMBA) and accelerate delivery times for customers, supporting the ongoing growth of digital purchases.

Strategic Location and Capacity

The new logistics center spans 11,000 square meters and is equipped to process up to 1.5 million packages per month. During peak demand periods, the facility can handle as many as 60,000 shipments daily. This infrastructure upgrade is a key component of Mercado Libre’s broader strategy to enhance its logistical network across Argentina. The company has recently focused on expanding its warehousing capabilities and has introduced air cargo services in collaboration with Aerolíneas Argentinas, following successful trials of cargo planes operated by the national airline.

Adrian Ecker, Vice President of Commerce and Country Manager of Mercado Libre Argentina, highlighted the significance of the new center. “The inauguration of this center is part of the logistics expansion plan we are developing throughout the country to continue improving the experience for those who buy and sell on Mercado Libre,” Ecker stated. He further emphasized that these investments are crucial for increasing operational capacity, reducing delivery times, and generating new employment and development opportunities for thousands of individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Financial Performance and Digital Growth

Mercado Libre’s expansion comes at a time of significant financial growth. In the first quarter of 2026, the company reported its fastest revenue growth in four years, reaching US$8.845 billion, a 49% year-over-year increase. This surge was driven by the acceleration of its e-commerce business and its fintech vertical. In Argentina specifically, the company saw a 35% increase in unit sales and a 41% increase in constant currency terms during the same period. The new logistics hub is designed to support and capitalize on this increasing volume of online sales.

Previous Tensions with Provincial Government

The opening of the new logistics center follows a period of regulatory scrutiny. Two weeks prior to the inauguration, the province of Buenos Aires had charged Mercado Libre with including 10 allegedly abusive clauses in its contracts. The provincial government threatened the company with a fine of $1.815 million if these terms and conditions were not modified. This marks a continuation of tensions between Mercado Libre and the provincial administration, notably concerning tax regulations on virtual wallets, which the company’s founder, Marcos Galperin, had previously questioned.
