Argentinian business leaders, gathered for the annual meeting of the Asociación Cristiana de Dirigentes de Empresa (ACDE), have underscored the critical need for fiscal surplus and collective dialogue to ensure the nation’s prosperity. The two-day event, themed “The Essential, Now,” saw a full attendance of over 500 professionals, reflecting a strong engagement with the pressing economic and ethical questions facing the country.

The central message from the assembled executives was clear: there is no “magic” solution to economic woes. Instead, a sustainable path forward requires a foundational commitment to fiscal responsibility, coupled with a deliberate effort to foster consensus and dialogue among stakeholders.

Key facts
| Topic | Focus |
| :———————— | :—————————————————————— |
| Fiscal Surplus | Necessary but only a starting point for economic progress. |
| Consensus and Dialogue | Essential for building a common project and future generations. |
| Artificial Intelligence | A tool requiring human judgment, ethical consideration, and adaptation. |
| Purpose in Business | Improving the lives of others through human-driven endeavors. |

A Call for Common Purpose

Victor Valle, president of ACDE, emphasized that progress is driven by people and that businesses must remain focused on their fundamental purpose: to improve the lives of others. “We need people to prosper and not lose sight of our purpose: we are people doing things to improve the lives of other people,” Valle stated. He urged attendees to consider the long-term implications of their decisions for families and future generations, advocating for a shared national project. The spirit of the Gospel, he suggested, offers a path of “Encuentro” – a coming together and listening.

Navigating Economic and Technological Shifts

The discussions also delved into the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on organizations, ethical dilemmas, and the perception of the business environment in Argentina. Gustavo “Paco” Manriquez, CEO of Supervielle, offered a stark analogy for the upcoming electoral year, suggesting a choice between “highway, service road, or perhaps dirt roads,” indicating anticipated turbulence.

Executives shared their experiences with AI, acknowledging its potential for efficiency gains. Sofia Pescarmona of the Pescarmona group highlighted the importance of learning and bringing in expertise for transformation, while Mariano Bosch, CEO of Adecoagro, recounted turning a neglected plant into a world-class facility through community engagement and operational excellence.

The integration of AI was framed not just as a technological upgrade but as a process requiring continuous learning and adaptation. Manriquez admitted to personally seeking out knowledge in New York to understand AI’s competitive necessity for banks against Fintechs. Pescarmona noted AI’s utility in saving time on task evaluation and project planning.

Human Judgment in the Age of AI

Despite the advancements in AI, the human element remains central. Walter Abrigo, director general of Santex, acknowledged that AI generates tension but stressed that the “determining factor is human.” He advised learning to formulate the right questions for AI, emphasizing that adaptation is a human process, not a set of pre-defined recipes. Majd Sakr from Accenture, speaking from Manhattan, pointed out that while AI can match human scale, it struggles with ambiguous contexts and requires human judgment and responsibility.

The sessions also touched upon the ethical and spiritual dimensions of business. When asked about the presence of God in their work, leaders offered personal perspectives: Manriquez in his spiritual family life, Bosch in the coherence of actions, and Pescarmona in nature. The panel “Irremediably Human” explored the tensions and pressures AI introduces, with the consensus that managing these tensions is key to innovation.

The gathering served as a platform for business leaders to reflect on the core principles guiding their enterprises, advocating for a balanced approach that integrates fiscal responsibility with a commitment to human values and long-term societal well-being.
