Pochettino Sets High Bar for USMNT Ahead of World Cup Debut: “Success is Winning
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasizes a winning mentality and a reset of the team's mindset as they prepare for their World Cup opener.

The U.S. men’s national team is on the cusp of their World Cup debut, and head coach Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear that anything less than victory will not be considered success. Speaking ahead of their opening match against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium, Pochettino revealed that his primary focus since taking the helm in September 2024 has been on resetting the team’s mindset and fostering a winning culture.
Resetting the Mindset
Pochettino inherited a USMNT squad brimming with potential but, in his assessment, lacking direction. He acknowledged that the team had experienced tumultuous moments during his tenure, including a critical turning point after a series of poor performances in the Concacaf Nations League. However, he commended his players for their progress and for embracing the competitive culture necessary for international success.
“I think now is the moment where they need to build their way to prepare in an emotional and better way,” Pochettino stated, emphasizing that his players no longer require external motivation. He believes the team’s identity has solidified, showcasing an intense, attack-minded approach evident in recent friendlies against Senegal and Germany.
Achieving High Standards
The Argentine coach has consistently pushed his players to raise their standards, drawing parallels to his own national pride and the importance of representing one’s country. He noted that as the World Cup approached, the team began to “evolve and do better and better,” with players realizing the necessity of improvement and seriousness when playing for their national team.
“When the competition is close, I think [it helps] the players to realize we needed to improve our standards and to start to be more serious in the way that we take [playing] for your national team,” he explained.
Embracing American Sports Culture
Pochettino, who spent most of his playing and coaching career in Europe, has found a connection with American sports culture, which he believes heavily values winners. He has encouraged his USMNT players to lean into this aspect of the country’s sporting identity.
“I think [in] the end, being consistent in our fight, I think that is why we can say we arrive in a very good condition and I’m so proud [of]] the players,” Pochettino said. “All the players that were involved in that process, in one year and a half to today, I think they are much better players. The mindset starts to change and I think they embrace the culture of that country that is being the No. 1 in [being] competitive and not to play friendly games — playing non-official games or official games — and I think that is a massive step and it’s going to be massive for the future.”
Ready for the World Cup Stage
With all 26 players available, including defender Chris Richards who has recovered from an ankle injury, the USMNT appears poised for their World Cup opener. Pochettino confirmed that the starting lineup is decided, though he remained tight-lipped about whether the players have been informed.
His final advice to his squad is to play with a child-like freedom, free from excessive pressure and responsibility. “The players tomorrow need to go on the field and feel [like they are] in a bubble,” he advised. “They need to perform and for [performance], to respect some rules but also the most important is not to be disconnected with your emotional relationship with the game and we were talking about that, about that they need to think tomorrow and to play like they are a child. Not [with] pressure. Not [with] responsibility.”
