Experts Tackle Sustainable Economy: ESG Integration and Tech’s Crucial Role
At a recent Clarín Visión 360° event, business leaders and public officials discussed the critical need for integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards into core business strategies, emphasizing technology and AI as key enablers for sustainable growth and efficiency.

A panel discussion hosted by Clarín’s Visión 360° cycle brought together prominent figures from public and private sectors to dissect the evolving landscape of sustainable economies. A central theme revolved around the imperative for businesses to embed Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles directly into their operational core and strategic planning, moving beyond superficial corporate social responsibility to drive genuine growth and competitiveness.
The global economy faces significant financial losses, estimated at €25.4 trillion annually, due to linear economic models characterized by wasteful production and consumption patterns. This stark reality underscores the urgency for companies to develop robust sustainability strategies that align with their long-term financial objectives.
Key Challenges and Strategic Imperatives
The experts identified several critical areas for businesses navigating the transition to sustainability:
Integrating sustainability not as a fleeting trend, but as a foundational element of the business model.
Leveraging technology and innovation to enhance operational efficiency and connectivity while actively reducing resource consumption.
Addressing the inherent difficulties in establishing long-term sustainability plans within the cyclical nature of political administrations.
Ensuring that communication of sustainability initiatives is supported by clear data and demonstrable, real-world results.
Harnessing the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to achieve significant energy efficiencies and advance sustainable practices, despite its own energy demands.
The “Sustainability” panel featured insights from Pablo Bereciartua, Minister of Infrastructure and Mobility for the Government of the City of Buenos Aires; Germán Mansilla, Environmental Manager at Personal; Agustín Heredia Barión, Public Affairs and Sustainability Manager at Genneia; and Raluca Cocuz, Sustainability and Strategy Manager at Accenture. Franco Mercuriali and Silvia Naishtat moderated the discussion.
Technology as a Sustainability Enabler
Germán Mansilla of Personal highlighted his company’s focus on intertwining technology and innovation with sustainability goals to improve connectivity. He articulated that technology should function as a primary tool for minimizing resource use. This perspective was echoed by participants who acknowledged the growing digital footprint of everyday activities, from digital payments to online services, emphasizing the business need to decouple growth from resource depletion.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerged as a significant point of discussion. Research suggests AI could substantially boost energy sustainability over the next decade, potentially offsetting its own considerable energy consumption. While the expansion of data centers powering AI systems raises concerns about increased energy demands, studies indicate AI’s capacity to revolutionize energy efficiency across sectors and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“AI requires more energy for its use in the data centers, but this intelligence must serve us to be increasingly efficient and use fewer resources,” stated Mansilla. He added, “The challenge is to continue growing and delivering services by decoupling growth from resource consumption, and artificial intelligence comes as another tool to work on that.”
AI and the Future of Employment
Beyond environmental considerations, the rise of AI has prompted discussions about its impact on employment. Raluca Cocuz from Accenture reported that the company’s adoption of AI had not led to workforce reductions. Instead, Accenture invested in comprehensive employee training to integrate AI applications into daily tasks across all departments. “People already have their lives digitized to do daily things, and companies have to support this, complementing the experiences we have as consumers or workers,” Cocuz observed.
Public Sector Adoption of AI
In Buenos Aires, AI is already being integrated into public services. Bereciartua pointed to the city’s “free flow” highway system, which has eliminated toll barriers by using technology to read license plates. This system enhances traffic flow and yields sustainability benefits through reduced vehicle acceleration and lower fuel consumption. The infrastructure also allows for dynamic toll pricing based on traffic volume and time of day.
Long-Term Vision and Business Viability
Agustín Heredia Barión of Genneia stressed that sustainability must be viewed as a fundamental, long-term business imperative rather than a temporary trend. He argued that investment projects must demonstrate sustainability from conception through completion to ensure viability over a 10-to-15-year horizon. Raluca Cocuz emphasized the need for sustainability strategies to possess a clear purpose and for their communication to be substantiated by tangible outcomes, particularly for large corporations that require precise data for strategic digitalization and problem-solving.
