The Argentine Primera División Clausura match between Estudiantes de Río Cuarto and San Lorenzo de Almagro on Friday evening carries an unusual restriction: supporters of the visiting side who live in the Buenos Aires Autonomous City (CABA) will not be allowed into the stadium.

Estudiantes de Río Cuarto issued a statement on Thursday confirming that, following coordination with the provincial security agency COSEDEPRO, only San Lorenzo fans residing outside of CABA and in neighboring provinces may purchase tickets and enter the Estadio Antonio Candini. The club offered no public explanation for the geographical ban.

Por que importa

The decision creates a peculiar situation for San Lorenzo’s fanbase. The majority of supporters who regularly attend home matches at the Estadio Pedro Bidegain (El Gasómetro) live in the capital. Under this policy, those fans are excluded, while San Lorenzo sympathizers from other parts of Córdoba province or surrounding regions can attend.

Key facts

Restriction Fans with CABA residency prohibited; no visiting club colors allowed

Additional standard security measures apply. Supporters entering the stadium must not display shirts, flags, scarves or any clothing identifying them with the visiting club. The club statement framed the measures as necessary to ensure the normal development of the match and the safety of all attendees.

No precedent or explanation from COSEDEPRO or the club has been made public regarding why CABA residents are singled out. The restriction does not apply to San Lorenzo fans who live in other provinces, including other parts of Córdoba.

Why this matters for Argentine football followers

For followers of Argentine club football, this restriction highlights the patchwork of security policies applied to visiting fans across different provinces. While outright visitor bans have been common in certain high-risk fixtures, this case is notable for targeting fans based on their city of residence rather than on any specific security assessment linked to the match itself.

San Lorenzo, coached by Néstor Gorosito, enters the match in the middle of the Clausura table. The team faces a logistical challenge: a significant portion of its traveling support is effectively barred, while those who can attend must do so without visible club affiliation.

The policy is also likely to draw scrutiny from fan groups and civil liberties observers, who may question the legal basis for restricting access based on residency rather than individual conduct.
