Real Sociedad’s financial standing has taken a considerable hit over the past season, with the club’s squad value experiencing a sharp decline of nearly €90 million, representing a 25.9% decrease. The latest valuation from Transfermarkt places the team’s current worth at €255.4 million, a significant drop from last year’s €345.05 million.

This substantial devaluation comes as the club prepares for a return to European competitions under manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, facing a different financial reality than twelve months prior.

Reasons for the Decline

A primary factor contributing to this dramatic economic downturn is reportedly the departure of Martín Zubimendi last summer. His significant market value had previously inflated the club’s overall valuation. The calculations from both seasons also implicitly include the market price of loaned-out players.

Beyond these specific circumstances, the current squad valuation reflects a broader issue within the team, with many players experiencing individual devaluations. Only three players have seen their market worth increase.

Individual Player Devaluations

Among the most notable individual drops in value is that of Take Kubo. The Japanese attacker has seen his valuation decrease by €10 million, falling from €30 million to €20 million. An untimely injury in January against Barcelona disrupted his momentum and limited his consistent game time under Matarazzo, impacting his market appeal. This decline in value has also correlated with a reduced interest from the international market, though Kubo is still seen as an opportunity.

Other significant devaluations include goalkeeper Álex Remiro, whose value dropped from €14 million to €9 million, and Brais Méndez, from €12 million to €8 million. The “middle class” of the squad has also seen similar trends. Arsen Zakharyan’s valuation has decreased from €10 million to €8 million, while Yangel Herrera and Igor Zubeldia have seen their values fall from €9 million to €6 million each.

Supporting players like Aihen Muñoz have also experienced a dip, from €3.5 million to €2.5 million, and Jon Karrikaburu’s value is now €1.8 million. Carlos Soler, despite a notable season, has seen his value decrease from €8 million to €7 million, partly attributed to his age of 29. Guedes has maintained his valuation at €6 million.

Emerging Talent Offers Hope

The positive outlook for Real Sociedad’s finances comes from their promising young talent. Jon Martín has solidified his presence in the elite, with his valuation rising from €20 million to €25 million at just twenty years old. Icelandic forward Orri Óskarsson has also seen a significant financial escalation, jumping from €12 million to €20 million following his immediate goal-scoring impact. Goalkeeper Unai Marrero has also seen a modest increase, from €0.6 million to €1 million.

Squad Leadership and La Liga Standing

Despite the overall decrease, Real Sociedad maintains a balanced internal structure thanks to a necessary generational shift. The financial leadership of the squad is now a three-way tie between captain Mikel Oyarzabal, the emerging Jon Gorrotxategi, and Jon Martín, all valued at €25 million. Kubo and Óskarsson follow at the €20 million mark. This valuation still positions Real Sociedad as the fifth most valuable squad in La Liga.

Challenges Ahead for Matarazzo

This financial recalibration presents a challenging scenario for Pellegrino Matarazzo and his coaching staff. While the current valuation of €255.4 million remains competitive for European competition, it is a far cry from previous ambitions. The manager’s task will not only be to achieve results but also to help revalue a squad that has lost market momentum. With the Europa League on the horizon, the players will be expected to regain the lost millions on the pitch.
