The battle for Spain’s number one jersey at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is reportedly a close contest, but David Raya remains unfazed, expressing strong faith in his fellow goalkeepers. Raya believes that regardless of who Luis de la Fuente selects between himself, Unai Simon, and Joan Garcia, the team will be well-covered in goal.

Raya, who has enjoyed a stellar season with Arsenal, contributing to their Premier League title and Champions League final run, emphasized the high level of performance from his Spanish counterparts. He specifically highlighted Unai Simon’s past achievements, including the Nations League and Euro 2024 titles, as evidence of his capabilities.

“I think Spain is in good hands, whoever plays,” Raya told reporters at Spain’s training base in Chattanooga. “Since Unai debuted, he has performed at a really high level. We have won the Nations League, the Euros with him and he’s a great goalkeeper who has given us these titles.”

Goalkeeper Competition

The competition for the starting spot has intensified following strong performances from all three goalkeepers at their respective clubs. While Simon has been Spain’s primary goalkeeper in recent major tournaments, including their Euro 2024 victory, both Raya and Garcia have also impressed. Raya’s consistent form in the Premier League, earning him the Golden Glove award for consecutive seasons, has put him in strong contention. Meanwhile, Joan Garcia has also shone for Barcelona, contributing to their La Liga title triumph.

Despite the public debate in Spain surrounding the goalkeeping selection, Raya appears focused on his role within the squad. He acknowledged spending much of his career abroad but remains committed to representing his country.

“I am doing my job for my club to be the best I can be and to be able to represent my country, which is the most important thing,” Raya stated. “I am here to help the team as much as possible and to win the second (World Cup) star.”

Club Season Success

Raya’s confidence is bolstered by his successful club season. At Arsenal, he was instrumental in ending the club’s long wait for a Premier League title and reaching a first Champions League final in two decades. Although Arsenal ultimately fell short in the final, Raya’s individual performances were widely praised.

“Personally I think it was a very successful season and collectively it was spectacular,” he said of his club campaign. “We managed to win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.”

The World Cup 2026 presents an opportunity for Spain to add a second star to their national team crest. With a wealth of talent in the goalkeeping department and a squad aiming for further international success, the team appears optimistic about their prospects in the upcoming tournament.
