Socceroos Prioritize Recovery After Grueling World Cup Travel
Australia's national football team, the Socceroos, are focusing on rest and recovery following a demanding travel schedule after their opening World Cup victory, with key players expressing fatigue.

Australia’s national football team, the Socceroos, are placing a strong emphasis on recovery as they prepare for their next World Cup fixture. The squad is battling fatigue following a late-night flight and minimal sleep after their significant opening match victory.
Player Fatigue and Travel Strain
Goalscorer Connor Metcalfe admitted to feeling “pretty knackered” after the team’s arduous journey back to their Oakland training base. The Socceroos bussed from BC Place in Vancouver shortly after midnight, heading directly to the airport for a flight that departed after 2 am. They didn’t reach their accommodation until approximately 5 am, leaving them with limited time for rest before resuming preparations.
“The game was pretty late in general and usually after games I struggle to sleep,” Metcalfe stated. “It’s pretty unusual to fly straight back, especially being so late, but it’s probably better to get back as soon as possible.” He added that he managed only about four to five hours of sleep and requires a full day of rest before resuming training.
Historic Victory and Young Squad
The Socceroos secured a historic 2-0 win over Turkey in their World Cup Group D opener. Metcalfe’s 75th-minute strike sealed the victory against a team many had anticipated as potential dark horses in the tournament. The starting lineup for this crucial match had an average age of 24, highlighting the team’s youthful energy.
Defender Cameron Burgess, at 30, was the oldest player in the starting XI. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach is 22, with Jordy Bos (23), Paul Okon-Engstler (21), and goalscorer Nestory Irankunda (20) also featuring prominently. Burgess acknowledged his role as an experienced presence within the squad, aiming to provide guidance and composure.
“Obviously I might have to do that and I believe that’s a big part of my role in the team, to be the experienced one and to calm things down at times and just be a voice as well,” Burgess commented. “But those guys are on a good trajectory in their careers, and I think they showed last night what they can do.”
Focus on the Next Opponent
Despite the emotional high of their opening win and the physical toll of travel, the Socceroos are already looking ahead to their next challenge: a match against tournament co-hosts, the United States. This fixture is scheduled for Friday in Seattle, which will be Saturday morning AEST.
While the team’s immediate focus is on recovery, the mental aspect is also being addressed. Burgess expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to remain grounded and avoid complacency, attributing this to an inherent “Aussie way” of taking things one game at a time.
Player Updates
At a training session on Sunday afternoon in Oakland, Aiden O’Neill was observed walking around the ground, indicating he was “a little bit sore” according to Metcalfe. The rest of the squad participated in small-sided games. O’Neill and Metcalfe were among the few players, apart from the central defenders and goalkeeper, who were not substituted during the match against Turkey.
Burgess, who was born in Scotland but committed to representing Australia in 2014, expressed no regrets about his decision, especially after witnessing significant moments in his career over the past 24 hours. He acknowledged watching Scotland’s World Cup victory against Haiti alongside fellow Aberdeen-born Socceroo Harry Souttar.
