Iran Team Trains Amid Protests in United States Ahead of World Cup Debut
The Iranian national football team held its first training session in the United States under a heavy security presence, as demonstrations by members of the Iranian diaspora protesting the regime took place outside the facility.

The Iranian national football team, known as Team Melli, conducted its inaugural training session in the United States in Los Angeles, preparing for their upcoming World Cup debut. The practice, held at Dignity Sports Health, home to the LA Galaxy, was shadowed by significant security measures and vocal protests from members of the Iranian diaspora.
Demonstrators gathered near the training venue, expressing dissent against the current Iranian regime. Waving American and Israeli flags, symbols considered antagonistic by Tehran, protestors voiced their opposition to the team’s participation in the World Cup. They argued that the team represents the ruling regime and not the Iranian people, citing human rights concerns.

“This is the team of the regime, not ours. They have stolen our name, our strength… this does not represent us,” stated Tirdoed, one of the protestors, to EFE. He further elaborated that the team’s presence in the U.S. was an opportunity to enjoy democratic freedoms while, in their view, thousands have been killed in Iran. Protestors called on FIFA to exclude the team from the tournament.
Bahar, another member of the Iranian diaspora, echoed these sentiments, stating, “They wanted freedom, like any other citizen in the U.S., but they (the Tehran government) have massacred thousands of people and FIFA has the audacity to allow that flag to be flown.” She planned to attend the upcoming match to raise awareness about the political situation in Iran, intending to display the “Lion and Sun” flag, a pre-1979 secular symbol of Iranian identity.

In contrast, some supporters of the team also made their presence known. T.Z., who identified himself by initials, proudly displayed the current Iranian flag. While acknowledging imperfections within the Islamic Republic, he expressed a desire to avoid nationalistic rhetoric that targets ethnic minorities.
Inside the facility, Iranian-American Farih conveyed pride in seeing his compatriots compete. He acknowledged the challenging circumstances under which the team operates, referencing past restrictions, but expressed confidence in their ability to perform. “These players have adapted to worse circumstances, so surely tomorrow they will be able to give the best possible result,” he told EFE.
Team Melli arrived in California on Sunday after receiving authorization from Washington to stay overnight before their World Cup opener against New Zealand. Their travel to the training facility was under a substantial security escort.
The team’s World Cup campaign will commence with a match against New Zealand, followed by fixtures against Belgium and Egypt.
