Nico Williams, the dynamic winger for Athletic Bilbao, is making careful but positive progress in his recovery from a left hamstring injury. The setback occurred during a match against Valencia at San Mamés on May 10th, forcing him to be substituted by his brother, Iñaki Williams.

Club medical staff confirmed a “moderate injury to the ischiocrural muscles of his left leg” the following day. This injury led to him missing the final three league games of the season against Espanyol, Celta Vigo, and Real Madrid, matches that significantly impacted Athletic’s already slim European qualification hopes.

Despite the injury, Nico Williams was included in Luis de la Fuente’s 26-player squad for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. He continued his rehabilitation with the national team during their training camp.

Injury Timeline and World Cup Involvement

Williams was unable to feature in Spain’s pre-tournament friendlies against Iraq and Peru. However, manager Luis de la Fuente called upon his services in Spain’s opening World Cup fixture against Cape Verde. Introduced in the 87th minute as a substitute for Rodri, Williams had limited time, playing just nine minutes, including stoppage time, in an attempt to break a deadlock.

In the second group stage match against Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, Williams saw increased action, playing 37 minutes. He was brought on in the 61st minute for Alex Baena, who had been covering the left flank. The game concluded with a 4-0 scoreline in favor of Spain, with goals from Lamine Yamal, a Mikel Oyarzabal brace, and an own goal.

Player’s Perspective on Recovery

Williams himself has expressed cautious optimism about his recovery. In a recent interview with Cadena Ser, he stated, “I feel good, but at the end of the day, the doctors check you every day with the ultrasound. We have to go little by little. We can’t force things.”

He acknowledged the challenge of regaining match sharpness after a period of inactivity, noting, “That freshness after being out for so long is difficult, but for the match against Uruguay, I think I’m going to be fine.” Williams has a target date in mind for potentially featuring more prominently, aiming for the match against Uruguay. He believes he will be “good” for that encounter.

Managerial Decisions and Future Prospects

The Spanish national team is in a strong position in their group, potentially securing first place with a draw against Uruguay. This would help them avoid a difficult knockout stage tie against Argentina. For that crucial match on July 2nd, Nico Williams is expected to be fully fit.

De la Fuente faces decisions regarding his starting lineup. While he has shown confidence in the team that performed well against Saudi Arabia, with Baena on the left, Dani Olmo in the attacking midfield role, and Lamine Yamal on the right, the return of Williams could offer a different dynamic. It remains to be seen if De la Fuente will opt to start Williams against Uruguay, following his approach of starting Lamine Yamal in previous games.
