The 2026 FIFA World Cup has set new benchmarks for fan engagement and stadium attendance during its initial group stage, according to official figures released by FIFA. After 17 days and 72 matches, the tournament has drawn an unprecedented 4,644,549 spectators across 16 venues in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

This remarkable turnout signifies a new era for the expanded 48-team format, with FIFA reporting a stadium occupancy rate of 99.7%. The average attendance per match stood at an impressive 64,508 spectators. This figure surpasses the previous record of 3.5 million set during the 1994 World Cup, also held in the United States.

Fan-Driven Success

The tournament has not only seen record numbers in the stands but also significant fan activity off the pitch. FIFA data indicates that over 300,000 hot dogs and more than 2.8 million beers were sold at official concession stands. This volume of hot dog sales, if laid end-to-end, would stretch approximately 45 kilometers, connecting the New York New Jersey Stadium to JFK International Airport.

The popularity of food and beverages varied across host nations. While beer and chips were favored in Canada, fans in the United States opted for hot dogs, and in Mexico, pizza and chips were the most popular choices. Adidas reported that the Mexican national team’s jersey was the best-selling national team shirt for the brand during the group stage, contributing to over $1.13 billion in event-related sales for the company.

Record-Breaking Day

June 25th marked a singular day of immense fan presence, with FIFA recording an all-time tournament high of 426,834 spectators in a single day. Throughout the group stage, eight matches have seen attendance figures exceeding 80,000.

The demand for tickets has been exceptionally high, with FIFA noting the Colombia vs. Portugal match in Miami as one of the most sought-after fixtures based on ticket demand. Other highly requested matches include the final, scheduled for July 19th, and the past encounter between Mexico and South Korea in Guadalajara.

The primary ticket purchasers represent a global audience, with fans from the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Germany, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and France leading the way. These figures underscore the massive global appeal and logistical success of the 2026 World Cup.
