France has advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay, a match characterized by its physicality and Paraguay’s disruptive tactics. The win sets up a quarterfinal clash against Morocco, a team expected to offer a different but equally demanding challenge.

Physical Battle in Sweltering Heat

The match against Paraguay was described by French midfielder Kouadio Kone as unlike any he had played before, citing “cheap shots” and numerous shoves. The intense heat, reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, added another layer of difficulty, leading to cramps for several players. Despite the challenging conditions and Paraguay’s robust approach, France managed to maintain focus and secure the win, with William Saliba acknowledging the referee could have intervened more to calm the physicality.

“Sometimes it’s clear we can get frustrated too, we’re not going to let them get away with it,” Saliba commented post-match. “But we stayed focused, and like I said, we finished with 11 men, even though we got a few yellow cards. But there you go, sometimes it’s battles, the match demanded that, and there you go, we fought a battle, we won the battle, 1-0, and we are qualified.”

The short turnaround between matches in the tournament also impacted player availability, with Aurelien Tchouameni missing the game due to a knock. The reduced rest period, now five days compared to nearly a week during the group stage, will be a factor for teams as the tournament progresses.

Looking Ahead to Morocco

France now prepares to face Morocco in the quarterfinals. While Paraguay relied heavily on physicality, Morocco is expected to present a more complete challenge with their individual talent and ability to control possession. France’s previous encounter with Morocco in the 2022 semifinals resulted in a 2-0 win for Les Bleus, but this Moroccan side has shown significant growth.

“They’re a very strong team. They’ve beaten major nations throughout the tournament, and most importantly, they haven’t lost a single game,” Saliba said about Morocco. “So we know it won’t be easy. They’re a very good side; they defend well and have plenty of individual talent.”

Morocco has demonstrated their capability to be physical when needed, as seen in their matches against Canada and the Netherlands. Despite a potential injury concern for striker Ismael Saibari, Morocco’s depth was evident when Sufiane Rahimi scored off the bench against Canada.
