Police Threaten Release of Hacker’s Voice in Odido Data Breach Investigation

Dutch police have indicated they may release a voice recording of a key suspect in the massive data breach that affected telecom provider Odido earlier this year. The move comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the hack, which saw millions of customer records compromised.

The police’s strong suspicion that Dutch criminals were involved stems partly from the initial stages of the hack. The breach reportedly began with a phone call from a Dutch-speaking individual to Odido’s customer service. Investigators are now making a direct appeal to this caller to come forward.

The incident began in early February when the hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for stealing data from over six million Odido customers. Following Odido’s refusal to pay a ransom, the hackers allegedly posted the stolen information on the dark web.

The breach was facilitated by a sophisticated social engineering tactic. One of the perpetrators reportedly called an Odido customer service representative, impersonating an IT department employee. The caller successfully convinced the employee to log into what turned out to be a fake work environment, thereby granting access to sensitive customer data. Two days after this deceptive act, ShinyHunters notified Odido that millions of customer records had been exfiltrated.

Ongoing Investigation

The police investigation is expected to continue for several more months. Authorities believe that those involved in the hack may have discussed their actions either online or within their personal circles. The police are also aware that discussions about the breach are occurring within the wider cyber community, and they are urging individuals who may have knowledge about the perpetrators to share this information with them.

In addition to the Odido customer data, a supplier for Odido had previously warned about the specific hacking method employed in this incident, highlighting the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals.
