Independiente, a prominent Argentinian football club, has taken a significant step to protect its young athletes by hosting a workshop focused on preventing online grooming. The initiative comes after the club officially reported and denounced three cases of grooming within its youth academy, highlighting the growing risks faced by minors in the digital age.

Digital Dangers and Responsible Habits

The workshop, organized by the club’s Department of Psychology and Work, aimed to foster “prevention, care, and the construction of responsible digital habits” among its junior players. In an era dominated by social media, children and adolescents are increasingly vulnerable to grooming tactics, where adults may create fake identities and profiles to deceive and exploit them.

The educational session delved into the specific risks associated with grooming, outlining effective prevention strategies. A key focus was on empowering young players to recognize warning signs and understand the importance of seeking help from trusted adults. The club emphasized that open communication and the courage to ask for assistance are crucial protective tools.

Club’s Proactive Stance

This proactive measure follows Independiente’s formal reporting of three grooming incidents detected within its infanto-juvenile football programs. The situation came to light when a parent alerted the club, leading to the identification of two further similar episodes.

In response, the club took decisive action. On May 15, 2026, a club representative and an official formally filed a criminal complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office No. 2 of Avellaneda. They presented collected evidence and agreed to return on May 18 to further expand their statement to the investigating prosecutor.
