Boca Juniors Officially Welcomes Montero and Villa as New Signings

Boca Juniors has officially confirmed the signings of goalkeeper Álvaro Montero and forward Sebastián Villa, strengthening their squad for the upcoming Copa Sudamericana campaign. The club made the announcement on Friday afternoon, following manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s earlier comments about anticipated reinforcements.

New Arrivals Boost Squad

Álvaro Montero, a 31-year-old Colombian international goalkeeper, joins Boca Juniors from Vélez Sarsfield. The club reportedly paid around four million dollars for his transfer. Montero’s arrival is seen as crucial given the team’s goalkeeping situation, with Leandro Brey not yet fully convincing and veteran Javi García seeing limited game time. Agustín Marchesin remains sidelined with a long-term injury. Montero brings international experience, having recently participated in the 2026 World Cup.

Sebastián Villa returns to Boca Juniors for his second stint with the club. The forward’s initial departure was marked by legal issues and disagreements with the club’s management. However, negotiations led by Juan Román Riquelme have facilitated his return. Boca Juniors is understood to have paid approximately 6.5 million dollars for Villa’s transfer from Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza. He has signed a four-year contract, with the objective of regaining the form that established him as a key player for the team.

Managerial Expectations

Rodolfo Arruabarrena, affectionately known as “El Vasco,” had expressed his need for new signings after Boca Juniors’ 2-0 victory over Sarmiento in the Copa Argentina. He emphasized that until contracts were finalized, no new player could be considered a definitive reinforcement. The club’s swift action in announcing Montero and Villa less than 24 hours later addresses these concerns and provides Arruabarrena with options to enhance internal competition and shape the squad according to his vision.

Copa Sudamericana Focus

The addition of Montero and Villa comes at a critical juncture for Boca Juniors, just before their debut in the Copa Sudamericana playoffs. The team is set to face O’Higgins in the first leg at La Bombonera on Thursday, aiming to secure a place in the Round of 16. The new signings are expected to be integrated into the professional squad starting Saturday, making them available for selection as the team embarks on its continental journey.

Club’s Official Statement

The official announcement from Club Atlético Boca Juniors stated: “The Club Atlético Boca Juniors informs that Álvaro Montero, goalkeeper from Vélez Sarsfield, and Sebastián Villa, forward from Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza, have signed contracts with the Institution and will join the professional squad on Saturday.” This confirms that Arruabarrena will have two significant additions to his lineup as the team prepares for crucial matches.
