Infantino Hails World Cup Final as “Gift from Football Gods

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has declared the upcoming World Cup final between Spain and Argentina as a “gift from the gods of football,” expressing his profound enthusiasm for the championship match. Speaking to MARCA just a day before the final at the Metlife Stadium, Infantino believes the tournament has culminated in a perfect finale, featuring two of the world’s top-ranked teams and a compelling generational narrative.

The final pits Lionel Messi, potentially in his last World Cup appearance at 39, against Lamine Yamal, the prodigious young talent representing the future of Spanish and global football. Infantino sees this dual narrative as something beyond imagination.

Por que importa

“This final is a blessing from the gods of football,” Infantino stated, emphasizing the presence of Messi, Yamal, and numerous other exceptional players. He highlighted the visual contrast between the seasoned icon and the emerging star as “something incredible.”

Infantino asserted that both Spain and Argentina have demonstrably earned their place in the final, not just by reaching the last match but through their exceptional performances throughout a challenging tournament. “They are the two best teams. They deserved to be in this final and have played exceptionally,” he explained. “It wasn’t easy to get here. There were 48 teams, incredible matches, and a very complicated World Cup.”

The FIFA President specifically addressed the captivating image of Messi and Yamal facing off in the most significant match of the tournament. “You have Messi, you have Lamine Yamal, and many other exceptional footballers. But then you also have that photo. It’s something incredible,” he remarked, underscoring the significance of a final that brings together a player who defined an era and a youngster poised to lead the next.

Infantino anticipates a final that will capture global attention, predicting it will be “like fireworks” and “incredible.” He projected that “3 billion people will watch how this World Cup ends.”

Reflecting on the tournament as a whole, Infantino unequivocally labeled it the best World Cup ever played. “The World Cup is being absolutely spectacular, unique, and incredible. We have the best players, the best teams, the people, full stadiums, and a total celebration,” he affirmed. “The world stops and watches. It is the best in history, past and present, and it also prepares us for the future.”

While Infantino had anticipated a successful tournament, he admitted that even his high expectations were surpassed by the public response, international impact, and the overall atmosphere. “I imagined it would be big, but not like this. Not of this magnitude, with this atmosphere, this celebration, and this energy,” he acknowledged. “There is happiness all over the world. Of course, when you lose, you are sad, but people have come from all over to celebrate football.”

A notable aspect highlighted by the FIFA President was the positive coexistence among fans and the apparent absence of significant incidents. “We have not had incidents. People have come from all over the world, and everyone is celebrating football,” he stressed. “All the champions have played, but also new teams and new countries. We have seen stories that only football can write and turn into legend.”
