The relationship between German football and FC Barcelona has seen various phases, from early club foundations to modern-day signings. While Dutch influence was prominent in certain eras, German players and coaches have also left their mark on the Catalan club.

Early German Ties

The very origins of FC Barcelona reveal a significant German presence. Among the club’s founders, known as the ‘Twelve Apostles,’ was Otto Maier. The first lineup also featured a German player, Eduard Schilling. In the early years, Udo Steinberg was a notable figure, even scoring the first goal in the historic El Clásico rivalry against Real Madrid in 1902. Other early German players included Friedrick Matthias, Julius Müller, and Walter Rositzky. The club even had two German presidents: Paul Haas and Otto Gmelin.

Modern Era German Stars

In the modern era, the arrival of German players at Barcelona became more pronounced. Bernd Schuster, often considered the first major German star at the club, joined after an impressive performance at Euro 1980. He became a pivotal player for Barcelona, leading the team to a La Liga title in the 1984-85 season after an 11-year drought. Despite his significant contributions, his tenure ended controversially when he moved to rivals Real Madrid.

Goalkeepers have also represented Germany at Barcelona. Robert Enke had an unfortunate stint during the turbulent 2002-03 season under Louis van Gaal. In contrast, Marc-André ter Stegen, who arrived in 2014, has enjoyed a remarkably successful decade at the club. He has been a consistent starter, securing numerous titles including a treble, and even served as captain before injuries impacted his later years.

Other notable German signings include Kevin-Prince Boateng, who had a brief and largely unproductive spell in the winter of the 2018-19 season. More recently, Ilkay Gündogan joined in 2024, bringing his Champions League-winning pedigree from Manchester City. Gündogan showcased flashes of his class but the season concluded without silverware and with a managerial change.

German Coaches at the Helm

The influence of German football extends to the dugout as well. Hennes Weisweiler was the first German coach, briefly managing the club in 1975. His tenure was cut short partly due to a reported clash with Johan Cruyff. Udo Lattek followed in 1981, winning a Cup Winners’ Cup but ultimately losing a league title he seemed destined to win.

The most recent German manager is Hansi Flick, who took over in 2024. Flick has a prior connection with Gündogan, having managed him for the German national team. His appointment suggests a continued belief in German expertise within the club’s hierarchy.
