Ajax Amsterdam is reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Barcelona’s experienced goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo. The Dutch club, under the guidance of their new head coach Míchel, is said to have identified the 34-year-old German as a primary target to bolster their goalkeeping department.

Ter Stegen, who has a contract with Barcelona until 2028, is currently in the final stages of his recovery from a left hamstring injury that required surgery. The injury occurred on January 31st while he was playing for Girona. Following the diagnosis and consultation with medical staff from both Barcelona and Girona, he underwent surgery in February and has been undergoing rehabilitation at Barcelona’s facilities.

Por que importa

Ajax’s interest is reportedly driven by Míchel’s desire to bring in a goalkeeper with Ter Stegen’s quality, experience, and leadership. Míchel previously worked with Ter Stegen at Girona and is said to have had a positive relationship with the player despite the injury.

The report indicates that Ajax has begun gathering information on Ter Stegen’s physical condition, a logical step given his recent injury history, which includes issues with his back and patellar tendon in addition to the current hamstring problem. The presence of Jordi Cruyff, Míchel, and his staff at Ajax, all of whom have connections with Barcelona, may facilitate discussions.

Contexto

Ter Stegen is expected to receive medical clearance for Barcelona’s pre-season training, which begins on July 13th. However, his future role at Barcelona may be influenced by the club’s plans and the emergence of other goalkeepers. With Joan Garcia reportedly on post-World Cup vacation during initial pre-season training, Ter Stegen could see more immediate game time. Nonetheless, head coach Hansi Flick had previously indicated Joan as his number one and Wojciech Szczesny as his second choice, suggesting Ter Stegen’s starting position might not be guaranteed.

The potential move to Ajax could offer Ter Stegen a prominent role at a club with a rich history, and it would reunite him with Míchel. The coming weeks will likely be crucial in determining the 34-year-old’s next career steps as he nears a return to full fitness.
