Anselmi considered for Racing coach role, but Vojvoda leads the race
Martín Anselmi is one of two options being considered by Racing's management to replace Gustavo Costas, though Juan Pablo Vojvoda is currently the primary candidate.

Martín Anselmi is among the top candidates being considered by Racing’s board to succeed Gustavo Costas as head coach. The interest in Anselmi gained momentum after the pursuit of Nicolás Diez was thwarted when Argentinos Juniors refused to release him.
Anselmi, a 40-year-old coach, has garnered support from the technical secretariat and sporting director Sebastián Saja. However, he faces a significant hurdle in Diego Milito, who reportedly has reservations based on Anselmi’s past experiences in Brazil and his time with Gabriel Milito’s coaching staff at Independiente in 2016.
The club’s president, on the other hand, appears to favor Juan Pablo Vojvoda. Vojvoda’s potential arrival could be facilitated by businessman Cristian Bragarnik, who has previously held considerable influence at Racing and might also help in bringing in new players.
Coaching Experience and Background
Both Vojvoda and Anselmi are currently unattached. Anselmi’s recent stint at Botafogo was brief, lasting less than three months from January to March of this year. He had initially signed a contract until December 2027 but managed only 18 games, with a record of seven wins, two draws, and nine losses. His departure from the Brazilian club was announced shortly after a league victory, with factors such as elimination from the Copa Libertadores preliminary phase, a poor start in the Brasileirão, and a decisive exit from the Carioca state championship contributing to his exit.
Before his time in Brazil, Anselmi coached Porto in Portugal during the first half of 2025. In 21 matches, he secured 10 wins, 6 draws, and 5 losses. His coaching career also includes spells at Cruz Azul in Mexico, Unión La Calera in Chile, and Independiente del Valle in Ecuador. At Independiente del Valle, he coached Agustín García Basso and led the team to significant success, winning four titles: the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Ecuador in 2022, and the Recopa Sudamericana and Supercopa de Ecuador in 2023.
Anselmi also has experience as an assistant coach at Independiente, Internacional de Porto Alegre, and Atlanta. Notably, he worked as an assistant to Francisco Berscé at Atlanta, who was recently a collaborator for Gustavo Costas at Racing. Anselmi also managed youth teams at Excursionistas and CAI.
Other Candidates Considered
While Vojvoda and Anselmi are the primary focus, Hernán Crespo’s name also resurfaced as a potential alternative. However, sources close to Crespo have categorically dismissed this possibility, indicating that he prioritizes coaching abroad and, within Argentina, would only consider managing River Plate should the opportunity arise.
The decision for Racing’s next coach is expected to be made between Vojvoda and Anselmi, barring any last-minute surprise candidates.
