Barcelona and La Masia extend Ballon d’Or dominance to 21 club trophies and 13 academy winners

FC Barcelona now claim 21 Ballon d’Or awards across the men’s and women’s game, while La Masia academy graduates have collected 13 golden balls, cementing the Catalan club as the most decorated institution in the award’s history after Alexia Putellas secured the 2026 women’s prize.

Barcelona and its famed La Masia academy have pulled further clear of every other club in Ballon d’Or history after the 2026 ceremony confirmed Alexia Putellas as the women’s winner and extended the Catalan club’s record to 21 golden balls across the men’s and women’s game.

Putellas, now with London City Lionesses, collected the 2026 women’s prize on the back of her final season at Barcelona, where she delivered another campaign that voters deemed the best in the world. Her third Ballon d’Or means the club has won six of the eight women’s awards handed out since the category was introduced in 2018, with Aitana Bonmatí taking the other three.

La Masia’s production line keeps rewriting the record books

The academy’s 13 Ballon d’Or winners now break down as seven men’s trophies and six women’s trophies. Leo Messi accounts for eight of those alone, six of them won while he was a Barcelona player and the seventh arriving in the early months of his move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

On the women’s side, the academy dominance is even starker. Every women’s Ballon d’Or won by a Barcelona-linked player has gone to a La Masia graduate. Putellas and Bonmatí have shared the six awards equally, while Ewa Pajor finished second in the 2026 voting, underlining the club’s depth at the top of the women’s game.

Lamine Yamal, still a teenager, finished third in the 2026 men’s ranking after placing second in 2025, and picked up the Best Talent award for the third consecutive year. Had he converted his podium finish into a win, La Masia would have added a 14th name to the list.

How the men’s Ballon d’Or dynasty was built

Barcelona’s men’s winners span six decades and include some of the most recognisable names in football history. The full men’s roll of honour reads: Luis Suárez (1960), Johan Cruyff (1973 and 1974), Hristo Stoichkov (1994), Ronaldo Nazário (1997), Rivaldo (1999), Luís Figo (2000), Ronaldinho (2005) and Messi (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021).

Real Madrid sit second in the all-time club ranking with 12 Ballon d’Or trophies, all in the men’s category, highlighting the gap Barcelona have opened through their women’s team success and La Masia’s sustained output.

Key facts

Category Detail
Total Barcelona Ballon d’Or wins 21 (15 men’s, 6 women’s)
La Masia graduate wins 13 (7 men’s, 6 women’s)
Most decorated player Leo Messi (8 wins, 6 with Barça)
Women’s awards since 2018 Barcelona players have won 6 of 8

What the numbers mean for Barcelona’s identity

The figures reinforce Barcelona’s claim as the reference point for player development in world football. No other academy comes close to La Masia’s Ballon d’Or production, and the women’s game has amplified a gap that was already significant in the men’s era.

For a club that has faced financial scrutiny and competitive pressure in recent seasons, the Ballon d’Or tally serves as a reminder that the player pathway from the youth setup to the first team remains the organisation’s most durable competitive advantage. The 2026 results also confirm that Barcelona’s investment in women’s football has created a generation of players who dominate individual honours in addition to team trophies.

The next test is whether Yamal, still eligible for the Best Talent category, can eventually join Messi, Cruyff and Ronaldinho as a men’s Ballon d’Or winner produced by the academy. His trajectory suggests the discussion is a matter of when, not if.
