Cape Verde defender Sidny Lopes Cabral has been awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup Goal of the Tournament for his curling strike against Argentina in the last-32 round. The 23-year-old becomes the first player from an African nation to win the prize, which was created in 2006.

The goal came with Cape Verde trailing 2-1 in extra time. Cabral, positioned high from left-back, received the ball on the left side of the Argentina penalty area. Cabral’s celebration saw him mobbed by teammates, then running to the stands where his mother had fainted from shock. “I got there, I saw my mom crying; she hadn’t even realized I was right there,” he recalled. “Everyone was busy tending to her because she had fainted when I scored!”

The goal briefly levelled the match, but Cape Verde were eliminated after an own goal by midfielder Diney in the 111th minute. Despite the defeat, the tournament marked the island nation’s first World Cup appearance, and Cabral’s strike became a defining moment of the competition.

Born in the Netherlands to Cape Verdean parents, Cabral moved through the academies of Feyenoord, Twente and Swedish club Helsingborg before signing for Rot-Weiss Erfurt in the German fifth tier in 2022. He made his Cape Verde debut the following year and joined Portuguese top-flight side Estrela da Amadora in 2025. In January 2026 he moved to Benfica, making 12 appearances, before transferring to Turkish club Trabzonspor in June, just ahead of the World Cup.

Cabral revealed that he received a message from Brazil and Real Madrid legend Marcelo after the match, who said he voted for Cabral’s goal as the tournament’s best.
