Tommaso Cassandro is ready for a new chapter with Palermo, driven by a clear objective: a return to Serie A. The new wing-back for the Sicilian club, who has previously experienced Serie A with Lecce and promotion with Como, is determined to make his mark in the upcoming season.

“My personal goal is definitely to return to Serie A,” Cassandro stated during his presentation. “I was there with Lecce, but I didn’t manage to find my space. Then I restarted with Como, with whom we achieved promotion, before moving to Catanzaro. Now I want to do well here in Serie B and continue to chase that stage that we all dream of since childhood.”

Palermo’s vibrant fanbase was a significant draw for Cassandro. He recalled the atmosphere during a previous match against Palermo, noting the presence of 35,000 supporters. “I knew very well what the Palermo environment was like,” he said. “We had already perceived it in the semi-final played against the Rosanero, when there were 35,000 people in the stadium supporting the team. It was an incredible emotion, because you see few stadiums like this in Italy. From this year, however, that crowd will be on my side.”

Adaptability and Competition

Cassandro is prepared to adapt to Filippo Inzaghi’s tactical system, even if it means playing in a different role than he might be accustomed to. Having played as a centre-back in a three-man defense last season, he is ready to return to a wing-back position.

“Today, players must be able to adapt to game systems and the coach’s needs,” Cassandro explained. “Playing as a centre-back or a full-back changes relatively little: you have to be ready to interpret what the coach asks for. I am convinced that I can be ready and contribute to the team.”

He also views competition for places as a positive force within the squad. “I think competition within a team is fundamental and fair, because it helps to improve both individuals and the collective,” he stated. “I know well that there is great competition in every role in this team. Whoever is feeling best and whoever the coach deems most suitable at that moment will play.”

Inzaghi’s Tactical Demands

The new Palermo coach, Filippo Inzaghi, has outlined a clear vision for the team, emphasizing aggression and a proactive approach. Cassandro revealed the coach’s instructions for the upcoming season.

“This year the coach has changed the system of play and wants to set up the team with a back four,” Cassandro shared. “He asks for great aggression, a high defensive line, and the desire to always face opponents head-on. We are assimilating his principles and hope to put them into practice as soon as possible, so as to arrive at the start of the championship ready.”

Reuniting with Bani

Cassandro will also reunite with former Bologna teammate Mattia Bani. He spoke about their past connection and the defender’s leadership qualities. “I had met him when he was already in the first team and I was playing in the Primavera of Bologna,” Cassandro recalled. “He was always one of the first to help me when I moved up with the seniors. Last year we found ourselves as opponents, while this year it will be even nicer to have him as a teammate. He is a leader, he has a great ability to drag the group, and I am happy to have found him again.”

Positive Environment and Personal Growth

The new signing also highlighted the positive reception he has received and the influence of former Palermo players on his decision. “Yes, when the possibility of coming here arose, I made some calls,” he confirmed. “In general, you already know well what Palermo represents, but I wanted to delve deeper. Both Mirko Pigliacelli and Di Francesco and Ceccaroni spoke very highly of the environment, the facilities, and the club’s organization. This also made the choice very easy.”

Cassandro embraces a positive outlook, even when reflecting on past setbacks. “I haven’t experienced particular disappointments, because I always try to look at the positive side of things,” he said. “Certainly, not being able to impose myself in Serie A with Lecce left me with a bit of bitterness, but it was also a formative experience that helped me improve.”

He also shared a unique personal habit: walking barefoot on the field after training. “It’s a practice I started back in Como,” he explained. “It’s called grounding: more and more people are using it abroad too. It helps me relax and I find it very good, which is why I am trying to continue it.”
