Christophe Lollichon Reflects on Chelsea Goalkeeper Recruitment and Recruitment Challenges

He recalled discovering a teenage Thibaut Courtois playing for Genk in Belgium. “One week later I was in Genk and saw this guy, and I said, ‘Wow, he has something special’,” Lollichon stated. He brought this assessment to Chelsea’s technical director Michael Emenalo and owner Roman Abramovich, suggesting they might have found the “next Cech in Belgium.” Chelsea signed Courtois in July 2011, subsequently loaning him to Atletico Madrid for three seasons. The transition from Petr Cech to Courtois, under manager Jose Mourinho, was a point of contention for Lollichon. Recruitment for Courtois’ Replacement

Following Courtois’ move to Real Madrid in 2018, Lollichon was instrumental in the search for his successor. He presented then-manager Maurizio Sarri with a list of potential candidates. The first name on his list was Petr Cech, who was nearing the end of his playing career but was deemed capable of a further two years. However, Sarri rejected this option.

Sarri’s insistence on Kepa Arrizabalaga, despite Lollichon’s reservations, led to Chelsea’s record-breaking €80 million (£71.6 million) acquisition of the Spanish goalkeeper. He had initially recommended Mendy to Petr Cech when Cech was still playing for Arsenal. Lollichon then pushed for Rennes to sign Mendy, and subsequently, he and Cech, who had returned to Chelsea as technical and performance advisor, pitched Mendy as the solution to Chelsea’s goalkeeping issues. Despite initial resistance from Rennes regarding the transfer fee, Mendy eventually joined Chelsea, addressing the club’s long-standing problem in the position.
