Costa Rica Dismisses Fernando Batista, Appoints Bryan Ruiz as Interim Head Coach
The Costa Rican Football Federation has parted ways with Fernando "Bocha" Batista after seven months of poor results, appointing legendary former captain Bryan Ruiz as interim coach for the final Concacaf Nations League group-stage matches.

The Costa Rican Football Federation (FCRF) has dismissed Fernando “Bocha” Batista as head coach of the men’s national team after a seven-month tenure marked by poor results. The federation announced the decision on Monday, appointing legendary former captain Bryan Ruiz as interim coach for the team’s upcoming Concacaf Nations League fixtures.
Batista, 55, was appointed in March 2026 with a mandate to lead Costa Rica’s long-term project toward the 2030 World Cup. His tenure began with a 5-0 friendly defeat to Iran, followed by a 2-2 draw with Jordan. In June, Costa Rica lost 3-1 to Colombia and 3-0 to England. The situation worsened in September, when the team fell 4-3 to Curaçao and 2-0 to Haiti in the Concacaf Nations League, leaving its qualification hopes for the quarterfinals in serious doubt.
FCRF president Osael Maroto confirmed the decision in a press conference. “We made the decision to separate Fernando Batista from the position and decided to appoint Bryan Ruiz on an interim basis,” Maroto said. “The results did not come. When we hired him, we thought about the entire process towards 2030. This change is happening because of the poor results.”

Bryan Ruiz takes over an interim role
Ruiz, 41, is one of the most iconic figures in Costa Rican football history. He captained the national team at three World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and scored the historic header that beat Italy 1-0 in the 2014 group stage, securing Costa Rica’s advance to the quarterfinals – the nation’s best ever World Cup performance. He also won the Eredivisie with Twente in 2009-10 and played for clubs including Fulham, PSV Eindhoven, and Sporting Lisbon.
Ruiz previously served as an assistant coach at Alajuelense and had a brief interim stint with the senior team. His first task will be to prepare Costa Rica for two crucial Concacaf Nations League group-stage matches: away to Nicaragua on Thursday and at home against Haiti on Sunday.
To advance to the quarterfinals, Costa Rica must win both matches and hope for a favorable combination of results from other groups. The team also faces the risk of relegation to League B of the Nations League, which would be a significant setback for a program accustomed to competing at the top level of Concacaf.
What this means for Costa Rica’s World Cup path
The coaching change comes at a delicate moment for Costa Rican football. The team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup under Batista’s predecessor, Miguel “Piojo” Herrera, and the current cycle toward 2030 is already under pressure. The FCRF’s decision to appoint a club legend as interim coach signals a desire to restore morale and reconnect with the fanbase, but the immediate priority is avoiding further damage in the Nations League.
Ruiz’s appointment also raises questions about the long-term direction of the national team. While he is widely respected for his playing career, his coaching experience is limited. The federation has not indicated whether Ruiz will be considered for the permanent role or if a wider search for a new head coach will begin after the current international window.
