Curaçao midfielder Livano Comenencia has spoken about the immense pride and surreal experience of becoming the first player to score for his nation at a World Cup, following their opening group stage match. The 22-year-old, who plays for FC Zürich, netted a historic goal against Germany, a moment he had prayed for.

“I dreamed that I would score before the match against Germany, I prayed for it, and it just happened,” Comenencia said in the latest Blue Wave Podcast, hosted by VI. “It is so special. For Curaçao and for me. The guys here now say I’m a legend, but I can’t believe it. People around me also ask: do you realize what you’ve done for Curaçao with your goal? Maybe not entirely yet.”

Por que importa

Despite the personal triumph, the match against Germany ended in a significant 7-1 defeat for Curaçao. However, Comenencia highlighted the team’s fighting spirit and the positive aspects of their performance.

“The result was less than ideal, but I am proud of how we showed courage with our guys, especially in the first half when we really performed well,” he explained. “Of course, you always want to win, but we certainly don’t see it as a negative match. It was a beautiful and important lesson for us. Despite the 7-1, we have introduced Curaçao to the world. With how we fight and give everything for our island. And the supporters did that too. During the national anthem, it seemed like the whole stadium was full of Antilleans, which was amazing. And after the goal, it was truly a frenzy, such joy everywhere.”

Comenencia, who came through the youth academy at PSV and later moved to Juventus, is relishing his World Cup experience. However, he acknowledges the significant challenge that awaits Curaçao in their next fixture against Ecuador.

“That will be a tough battle. Ecuador is also a physical opponent, they concede very few goals,” Comenencia stated. “It will be hard, but that’s logical. It’s the World Cup. And I am sure that we will be ready for it. We fight for Curaçao, we will give our all for Curaçao again against Ecuador.”

When asked who might score Curaçao’s next goal, Comenencia humorously suggested Tahith Chong.

The Blue Wave Podcast episode featuring Comenencia’s insights is available for listeners to access. Curaçao’s second group game against Ecuador is scheduled for Saturday night into Sunday morning, 2:00 AM Dutch time, in Kansas. Comenencia is expected to feature as a controlling midfielder, with coach Dick Advocaat leading the team.
