Didier Deschamps’ long and successful tenure as the manager of the French national football team has concluded following their 2-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-final. The loss means Deschamps will not achieve his ambition of winning a third World Cup title as manager, with his final match in charge being the third-place play-off.

Deschamps, who captained France to their historic 1998 World Cup victory and managed them to glory in 2018, steps down after 14 years at the helm. His departure marks the end of an era for French football, defined by consistent success and the maximization of the nation’s abundant talent.

Por que importa

France’s performance against Spain was a stark contrast to their attacking displays earlier in the tournament. They managed only 10 shots in the semi-final, their lowest total in a World Cup match, with an expected goals tally of just 0.3. This underperformance led to criticism from former players and pundits.

Patrick Vieira, speaking to ITV, expressed disappointment: “They haven’t shown up. I was expecting more. There was a big expectation for France to win the World Cup. France will all be disappointed by the result and the performance. All our top players went missing. Collectively we were really bad.”

Contexto

Deschamps, who holds the record for the most World Cup games managed by a single coach with 26, confirmed in January 2025 that he would be stepping down after the tournament. His farewell game will be against the loser of the England vs. Argentina match.

“It’s not time to talk about the future,” Deschamps stated in his post-match press conference. “It is not important on a personal level whether I leave a competition in a semi-final or final. I am extremely happy. I am very proud of everything we’ve done to reach this stage and to win a World Cup – to take the French team to the highest level.”

Deschamps’ legacy extends beyond trophies. He is one of only three individuals, alongside Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and West Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer, to have won the World Cup as both a player and a manager. His 14-year reign is a remarkable feat of longevity in modern football management.

During his time in charge, France reached two World Cup finals and a semi-final, and also made the final of Euro 2016 on home soil, losing to Portugal. They were desperately close to retaining the World Cup in 2022, losing to Argentina on penalties in the final.

The squad for this tournament featured a wealth of talent, including joint top scorer Kylian Mbappe, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, and rising star Michael Olise.

Former France striker Olivier Giroud, who won the 2018 World Cup under Deschamps, commented on his former manager’s impact: “There was extra motivation for all the players at this World Cup to give Didier the ending he wanted, and deserved. He deserved to exit by the big door. He did not quite manage that but he is still a great, for what he has already done in his 14 years. His record does the talking for him.”

Giroud also spoke of Deschamps’ paternal influence on some players: “I think he is like a second father for some players, like a second dad. For me it was not quite like that, but he gave me so many times his confidence, and I tried to repay him on the pitch. This makes us very close and because we won that World Cup, we are linked forever.”

He highlighted Deschamps’ coaching philosophy, which often involved giving players freedom while maintaining tactical balance and instilling a strong competitive mindset. “His desire, and his drive and ambition to be the absolute best and to win every single game. His competitive mindset was so clear.”

Gael Clichy, who played for Deschamps in his first year as manager, praised his transformative impact on French football. “His legacy was that he took a team that was below par, and he managed to bring that team back up to the top. This legacy of his really means we don’t have to talk about what he should or could have done. What he has done for French football as a player and a coach is fantastic. It is phenomenal.”

Deschamps took over from Laurent Blanc in 2012, inheriting a team that had faced significant challenges. Under his guidance, France transformed into a consistent global force.

The leading candidate to succeed Deschamps is former teammate Zinedine Zidane. Reports suggest a verbal agreement is in place for Zidane to take over after the tournament. Zidane, a World Cup winner alongside Deschamps in 1998, has had a successful managerial career with Real Madrid, winning three Champions League titles.

Clichy cautioned that the incoming manager would face a challenging task: “The guy who will come in behind Deschamps will find it hard. It won’t be easy.”
