A life-saving intervention occurred on a domestic flight in Brazil when a doctor, along with other medical professionals and flight crew, managed to revive a passenger who had suffered a cardiac arrest. The incident took place on April 29th during a flight from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro.

Dramatic Mid-Air Call for Help

Dr. Carolina Rossignolo Torres, a gynecologist and obstetrician, was on the flight to attend a Shakira concert when she was awakened by calls for medical assistance. Initially disoriented, she soon realized the seriousness of the situation. “In my dream, I started to hear someone screaming: ‘Help, help, a doctor!’ I thought I was dreaming. Until my friend turned and said, ‘I think they need a doctor over there’,” Dr. Rossignolo Torres recounted.

Emergency Response in the Cabin

Upon approaching the area where she was needed, Dr. Rossignolo Torres found a 43-year-old passenger unconscious in her seat, having experienced a cardiac arrest. The passenger’s husband was reportedly in distress. The doctor quickly laid the patient in the aisle to begin assessment and aid. “I touched her neck to check for a pulse and there was nothing. Her husband was asking for help desperately. The flight was full. There were many people going to the show. It was very intense because you go from being asleep to a life-or-death situation,” she explained.

Teamwork and Defibrillator Use

Working with the cabin crew, another doctor, and a nurse who also responded, Dr. Rossignolo Torres commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Flight attendants soon provided an automated external defibrillator (AED). After approximately 20 minutes of CPR and four shocks from the AED, the passenger was successfully resuscitated.

Safe Landing and Recovery

The aircraft landed at Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro, where the passenger was immediately transferred to a local medical facility. Dr. Rossignolo Torres later learned on May 4th that the passenger had survived and had been moved out of intensive care, breathing on her own.

A Doctor’s Duty

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Rossignolo Torres stated that she does not consider herself a hero, viewing her actions as part of her professional duty. “After a while, I started to understand the magnitude of the duty fulfilled. I would never stop doing what I did. At that moment, something changed in me. I honor my oath,” she affirmed, referring to the Hippocratic Oath. The incident highlights the importance of having medical professionals available during flights and the effectiveness of rapid response in critical medical emergencies.
