A former executive at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), identified as David Rush, has been arrested by the FBI after a search of his Virginia home uncovered more than 300 gold bars valued at approximately $40 million, along with millions in cash and several luxury watches.

The discovery was made last week during Rush’s detention. He has been charged with fraud and embezzlement, with his arrest coming after an internal CIA investigation flagged potential legal violations.

Rush’s Alleged Deceptions

According to court documents, Rush had a history of misrepresenting his academic and professional background. In his initial applications to work for the government, he claimed to have graduated from Clemson University in 2000 and later stated he held a postgraduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. However, authorities found these claims to be false. Additionally, he allegedly misrepresented his status in the Naval Reserve, claiming to be a member when he had actually been discharged.

Financial Irregularities

Between November of last year and March, Rush reportedly requested and received a “significant amount of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars for work-related expenses.” When the CIA attempted to locate these assets, they were unable to find the gold or the substantial foreign currency.

Seizure of Assets

On May 18, FBI agents executed a search warrant at Rush’s home, discovering 303 gold bars, each weighing approximately one kilogram. Based on the prevailing gold prices at the time, the estimated value of this gold exceeded $40 million. Investigators also found $2 million in cash and nearly three dozen luxury watches, many of them Rolexes. The court documents do not specify the exact reason for Rush’s possession of such a large quantity of gold and cash at his residence, nor the specific work project that led to this accumulation of wealth.

Interagency Cooperation

The CIA stated that following its internal investigation that identified possible violations, CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the information to the FBI for a law enforcement investigation. A joint statement from the FBI and CIA emphasized their close collaboration. “The FBI is working closely with our CIA and Department of Justice partners as we continue to investigate this matter thoroughly. We are committed to following the facts, ensuring accountability, and pursuing justice in accordance with the law,” the FBI statement read.

Rush is currently awaiting a court hearing to determine his legal status.
