Genoa Establishes “We Care Genoa” Medical Scientific Committee to Prioritize Health and Community

Genoa, Italy’s oldest football club, has taken a significant step to bolster its commitment to health and community by establishing the “We Care Genoa” Medical Scientific Committee. This new initiative aims to extend the club’s care beyond the football pitch, focusing on the well-being of its players, their families, and the broader “rossoblù” community, including its dedicated fanbase.

The committee was officially presented at the club’s headquarters in Pegli, at Villa Rostan, within the Gianluca Signorini sports center, which recently served as the training ground for Daniele De Rossi’s squad before their season-end break.

General Director Flavio Ricciardella emphasized the importance of this new venture, stating, “Today is a very important day for us because we are presenting a project that goes beyond football and puts health and a sense of community at its center. Genoa and football have a duty to entertain all of us fans but also to be an example and support our society. This initiative wants to transfer this within the club. The growth the club has experienced can be transferred to the local area. In this context, we met with Bassetti, discussed the peculiarities of this territory, and this initiative was born.”

The committee will be guided by Professor Matteo Bassetti, Director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at the Policlinico San Martino in Genoa. Professor Bassetti clarified the committee’s broad mandate: “It will not deal with the footballers, but with families, young people, and fans. Promoting health through football. To achieve this, together with Genoa, the Casa della Salute, and myself representing the University of Genoa, we have selected eleven members. We decided not to have the typical football experts like orthopedists, physiotherapists, or cardiologists, but we have taken a 360-degree approach to provide support to everything surrounding the world of Genoa.”

This approach signifies a move away from specialized sports medicine towards a more holistic health support system for everyone connected to the club.

Diego Lopez, Chief of Football at Genoa, expressed his gratitude as a new member of the city. “As a new guest in the city, I thank you,” Lopez said. “As Genoa, we are always open to improving in all areas: football, medical, and communication. Luigi De Siervo, CEO of Lega Serie A, also attended the presentation, recognizing Genoa’s historical significance. “It is an honor to be invited by the oldest club in Italy,” De Siervo concluded. “I wanted to be close to Genoa, the most long-standing team in Serie A, and who better than you can build a service to support families.”
