Inter Miami forward German Berterame is conscious and recovering in hospital after suffering a serious head collision in Saturday’s MLS match against Montreal, his coach Guillermo Hoyos confirmed after the game.

The incident occurred in the 70th minute at Saputo Stadium. Berterame contested an aerial ball with Montreal defender Efrain Morales and landed awkwardly on the pitch, appearing to lose consciousness. Montreal’s Brayan Vera immediately called for medical assistance as players from both teams rushed to attend to the 27-year-old Mexican international.

After several minutes of on-field treatment, Berterame was taken off on a stretcher and transferred into an ambulance. He did not appear to have regained consciousness at that point, according to match footage.

Coach’s update on Berterame’s condition

Speaking to reporters after the match, Hoyos provided a cautious but reassuring update. “He’s recovering right now, he’s fine, conscious,” Hoyos said. “His family is aware of everything. They’re calm. The most important thing is that he’s okay, and right now he is ok.”

Hoyos described the moment as deeply alarming. “We were alarmed at first because the blow was very strong. On the play, it’s obvious there was an elbow, which is why a penalty was awarded, he fell like dead weight. I think he might have already been unconscious given the severity of the impact. He took that elbow and hit the ground hard. It was a moment of great desperation and deep sadness, because it went beyond football, and all that. It’s about human life, that’s what matters most. So, we just hope everything turns out well.”

The referee awarded a penalty to Inter Miami for the challenge on Berterame. Luis Suarez converted the spot-kick to score the only goal of the game, securing a 1-0 victory for the visitors. After scoring, Suarez held up Berterame’s Inter Miami shirt in a tribute to his teammate.

Berterame, who joined Inter Miami from Monterrey in January, has scored seven MLS goals for the club this season. His absence for future matches remains uncertain, pending medical evaluations and recovery.

Why this matters for football fans

This incident highlights the ongoing risks of aerial collisions in football and the importance of rapid medical response. For Inter Miami supporters, the focus shifts from the winning streak to Berterame’s health and recovery timeline. The match also underscores the emotional toll such incidents take on players and coaching staff, with both teams showing immediate concern for the injured player.

The incident also drew attention to the penalty decision, with Hoyos referencing an elbow in the challenge. Replays and official rulings may lead to further discussion about player safety and disciplinary actions.

Uncertainty remains regarding Berterame’s return to play. Concussion protocols and medical clearance will determine his availability for upcoming matches. Inter Miami’s next fixture is against New England Revolution on July 30.
