Javier Boñar reflects on dream debut and future with Atlético Madrid
The young Atlético Madrid defender shares his journey from the academy to the first team, discussing his aspirations and the challenges he has overcome.

Javier Boñar, a product of Atlético Madrid's renowned academy, has spoken candidly about his journey from a young prospect to a first-team player under Diego Simeone. The defender, who has been with the club since the age of seven, described his recent experiences as a "dream" and emphasized his determination to keep learning and growing.
From Academia to First Team
Boñar's rise through the ranks at Atlético has been marked by early achievements, including a debut in the Youth League at 16, captaining the reserve team, and becoming the youngest defender to debut and score for the first team. He has also amassed the most appearances in the Primera RFEF for the club's B team, with 94 caps. This season, he has experienced the ultimate dream of representing the senior squad, a journey he cherishes.
"I think what I've lived through in these months has been something different from the day-to-day," Boñar told MARCA. "It's been a dream for me. But yes, I am obviously a player for the reserve team. If I had imagined a dream, would it have included everything that is happening to me? Sure, because it's something I've always dreamed of."
Embracing Every Moment
Having grown up at the club, Boñar understands the significance of his current position. He approaches each training session and match with a mindset of continuous learning, recognizing that opportunities at the highest level are precious.
"In the day-to-day, trying to listen to all the teammates and learn, I think that's the most important thing because you never know when it will be the last time you'll be there," he explained. "That's what I thought in every training session, in every match. And the good thing is that after the first match and the second, I'm still here enjoying it to the fullest."
Overcoming Adversity
Boñar's path has not been without its challenges. A significant setback was a broken jaw during his youth career, an injury that he believes profoundly impacted his perspective.
"I always remember that moment because it changed my life," Boñar recalled. "An operation at such a crucial time, being a cadet and playing as a starter with the Juvenil A, was super important. Living everything we were going to live, all that age of Juvenil, with Pablo Barrios and with all the players who were there, was super important."
Despite the difficulties, Boñar's resilience shone through. He highlighted a challenging period with the reserve team after not being selected for a European Championship, which prompted him to redouble his efforts.
"It was a complicated moment, but I prepared myself very well that pre-season, I wanted to come from minute one, my family was with me, everyone knew that I was capable and in the end, it has been reflected that I have worked like nobody else," he stated. "I earned my place last year and I think this year, the same."
Debut and First Goal
The experience of debuting and scoring for the first team was surreal for Boñar. He described the feeling as being in a video game, a moment that his family also shared with immense happiness.
"The truth is I was quite nervous," he admitted. "My family and I were living some super happy days, living the moment because we never know what was going to happen. I was prepared because in the end, being here, they prepare you for what the first team is, and that preparation was very useful for me to face that match, which was like a dream for me, like being in a video game, living it in first person."
Interaction with Simeone
While Boñar did not directly interact with coach Diego Simeone immediately after his debut and goal due to a suspension, he values the coach's actions over words. Simeone's continued inclusion of Boñar in subsequent matchday squads and training sessions spoke volumes.
"Those words are irrelevant if the next day he doesn't keep taking you," Boñar said. "At the end of the day, words are irrelevant if the next day he doesn't keep taking you."
Responding to Criticism
Boñar acknowledged the external commentary regarding Atlético's use of young players, but he stressed that such external noise should not affect the focus of emerging talents.
"I think that for us young players, it affects us the least, more than anything because we are going to go out and compete in all matches, all plays and give our all," he asserted. "It was two or three details in each match that we didn't win; if we had, nobody would have said anything."
Looking Ahead
This season has offered Boñar a taste of elite competition, including appearances in the Copa del Rey and Champions League. He cherishes these experiences, viewing them as invaluable learning opportunities.
"I've had the luck to experience all the good things, the Copa del Rey, the Champions League, experiencing all those final stages," he said. "Obviously, I have the enthusiasm to experience everything to the fullest, to learn from everyone, from every minute of the tie because, as I say, you never know when I'm going to experience that again."
Returning to the reserve team after his first-team call-ups is, for Boñar, a return to reality and the primary objective of achieving promotion to Segunda División with his teammates.
"You reach reality, which is your team, the people you've been with all year, with whom you've fought for so long to get promoted to Second Division," he explained. "That's the day-to-day. And well, you come with the enthusiasm that after having been able to play in the first team…"
