Lautaro Martinez Praises Argentina’s Resilience and Scaloni’s Leadership After World Cup Quarter-Final Win

Argentina has secured a spot among the final four teams in the World Cup 2026, with striker Lautaro Martinez emphasizing the team’s growth in maturity, particularly during challenging phases of their quarter-final match against Switzerland. Martinez, who scored the decisive goal in the 3-1 victory, highlighted the squad’s ability to remain composed and patient under pressure.

“We want to repeat our success. This National Team always has something extra,” Martinez stated. “Even when we faced difficulties, we stayed in the game without losing patience. Eventually, the goals came, leading us to the semi-finals.”

Por que importa

He noted improvements in the team’s performance compared to their Round of 16 tie. “Against Egypt, we lost some dangerous balls, and they scored on the counter-attack. Today, we improved in that aspect and also returned to scoring from set pieces, a situation we prepare extensively in training.”

Martinez expressed immense pride in representing Argentina. “I am proud to be part of this group, this team, and this country. Once again, we have brought Argentina among the top four national teams in the world.”

Reflecting on his goal that sealed the win, Martinez shared a lighthearted moment. “I imagine my mother and wife, who were in the stands, were thinking: ‘That’s enough!’ I am truly happy to have scored and to have shared this moment with everyone.”

Defending Coach Lionel Scaloni

Lautaro Martinez strongly defended head coach Lionel Scaloni against criticisms regarding the team’s tactical setup. Martinez asserted that the squad is fully aware of their game plan and has unwavering confidence in Scaloni’s strategies because they are effective.

“There are those who say Scaloni doesn’t have a well-defined tactical system, but we know exactly what we are doing,” Martinez explained. “We have complete trust in his game plan because it works.”

Martinez pointed to the difficulties Argentina poses to opponents as the ultimate response to any criticism. “The funny thing is that some continue to criticize him, while every team we face spends days trying to figure out how to stop us. This speaks volumes about the work he and his staff are doing.”

He concluded with a strong endorsement of the World Cup-winning coach. “Scaloni no longer needs to prove anything. He has built a united team with a clear identity and a style of play that yields results. We will continue to follow him because we believe completely in his work and that of his staff.”
