Manchester United have been offered encouragement in their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with a former player suggesting the Portuguese international would be a more suitable signing for the Old Trafford club than rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils were previously considered frontrunners for Fernandes, with an £80 million deal reportedly on the table. However, Tottenham have recently emerged as strong contenders, reportedly possessing an “extraordinary” plan to outmanoeuvre Erik ten Hag’s side for the signing.

Fernandes is understood to be open to moves to either Manchester United or Tottenham, and with no club having yet agreed a fee with West Ham, the transfer battle remains wide open.

Expert Opinion on Fit

Robert Snodgrass, who previously played for West Ham, exclusively told Sports Mole that he believes Fernandes would be a valuable addition to Manchester United’s squad, particularly in light of Casemiro’s impending departure.

“I believe Man Utd would be the club he is most suited to,” Snodgrass stated. “With Casemiro leaving, he is a direct replacement there where he can look to fit in to that position. Whether he is first choice or not, he can be a good player for Man Utd to have with so many games to play.”

Snodgrass also commented on the financial aspect, noting, “The fee would need to be right from West Ham’s perspective, but with Premier League football on the table, the player would most likely want to continue to play in the Premier League.”

Squad Dynamics and Midfield Reinforcements

Manchester United confirmed earlier this year that Casemiro would be departing as a free agent in June upon the expiry of his contract, with the Brazilian widely expected to join Inter Miami.

The club is already nearing the signing of Ederson from Atalanta BC, but further midfield reinforcements are anticipated, especially following the serious injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan international was stretchered off during Friday’s World Cup defeat to Spain, and concerns linger over whether this injury could jeopardise his potential summer exit from Old Trafford.

Casemiro’s Legacy and Fernandes’s Potential

Casemiro, despite a sometimes divisive reception from Manchester United fans, is set to leave on a high after a stellar 2025-26 season where he played a crucial role in the club’s return to the Champions League.

A statistical comparison between Casemiro and Fernandes from the previous Premier League season reveals different strengths. Casemiro played fewer games and minutes but scored more goals. However, Fernandes provided more assists and boasted a superior pass completion rate. Fernandes also exhibited stronger take-on success and ground duel win percentages, suggesting he could offer a different dynamic to Manchester United’s midfield.

Key Facts

Player Club Key Stat Comparison (Approximate)
Mateus Fernandes West Ham United 4 assists, 87.4% pass accuracy
Casemiro Manchester Utd 9 goals, 17.3% conversion rate

The potential arrival of Fernandes could significantly bolster Manchester United’s midfield options as they prepare for a demanding season ahead, balancing domestic and European competitions. His ability to contribute offensively and his passing accuracy, as noted by Snodgrass, could be particularly beneficial.
